Hello,

I bought a Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8GB + dual mini 6 pin to 8 pin.

Running Mac OS High Sierra right now. Installing the graphics card before the update, or after the update to Mac OS Mojave?

Bios is MP51.0085.B00. How can I update the bios?

What do I need to do, to get my RX580 running like a sharm? I put the card inside without any changes, and my mac became really slow.

Thanks

Christian

Believe you may need to go MP51.0085.B00 > MP51.0089.B00 before you can install the Mojave Boot ROM firmware update.
(Mojave beta version is 138.0.0.0.0 but the release version should be available Monday, which possibly will be the same version.)

Need an EFI GPU in the system to get to MP51.0089.B00 via the latest High Sierra installer. This thread post #1 explains it very thoroughly:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mp5-1-new-bootrom-138-0-0-0-0-on-mojave-dp7-pb6.2132317/

So update to Mac OS 10.13.6 with my old GT 120

MP51.0089.B00

Then switch the graphics card to my RX 580.

Install the Mojave beta - wait...

138.0.0.0.0

Right?

Remove the RX580 from the system. Run the latest High Sierra installer downloaded from App Store with EFI GPU installed. You should be prompted for a firmware update after opening the installer. Follow the on-screen directions. (I assume your GT120 is an Apple issued EFI GPU, but only you can accurately answer that question.)

Allright, thanks. Yes, GT120 is EFI GPU

I just did this 2 days ago. Before that, my 4/5,1 was MP51.0085 running 10.13.6. I downloaded directly from the App Store High Sierra, and went through the installation process. The very first thing was a firmware update. I proceeded with the 10.13.6 installation after that. Now I am at MP51.0089. I have a stock GT120, and no other GPU installed.

Currently updating to 10.13.6 from a bootable usb. The installation is going so slow. It is moving, but very very slow. Every minute on the status bar will take 5 minutes. I have 6 minutes left on the status bar. Can someone confirm that it is going to work?
First update after a boot rom. Maybe that's the reason.

I went from MP51.0084.B00 directly to 138.0.0.0.0 if memory serves me. Not sure why you would need to upgrade to 0089.

SOME people are having issues with the newest beta getting to 138.0.0.0.0 from versions other than .0089. Recommendation because of that and eliminate potential issue. See the linked thread for more info.
[doublepost=1537578753][/doublepost]The firmware update does not require the software/OS update. If you were not promoted for firmware update upon opening the installer, the firmware will not be updated. You should have gotten a window with instructions almost immediately after opening installer.

Not trying to lead anyone down the wrong path but maybe linking to the relevant posts rather than a 45 page thread would be helpful. I still had zero issues updating as I stated.

I know why it was so slow.

My mac gives a lot of beach balls, if you call it like that in english. It crashes random for a few seconds and isn't nice to work with.

Symptoms I have:
Mac needs 3 minutes to shut down
Random beach balls
Takes long to open a program

I installed disk speed test. Results:

Write: 15 mb/s
Read: 20 mb/s

It is a sandisk ssd. Is my ssd broken?

Is drive APFS or HFS+?
Installed in SATA or PCIe adapter?
What OS and build number currently?
What model of the drive?
What is SMART status?
Can you install DriveDx and get report?
Do you have Carbon Copy Cloner installed? Clone to a spare (empty) HFS+ formatted drive (spinning or SSD).

Alright, will do that, but could you tell why?

is this a brand new SSD?

SanDisk has been problematic for a client in the past as an OS system drive. I would check to see if firmware updates are available.

I had read/write issues with system SSD (Samsung) after one of the High Sierra point updates (believe 10.13.2 or .3). Was related to APFS. Cloning drive to HFS+ formatted SSD immediately solved all issues. Search forum for posts by me on this. Cannot readily search/post links at the moment.

Why did you go Mojave beta? Beta is that - BETA. Not saying this issue should be happening either way, but no one should install a beta and expect zero glitches... hope you have a bootable clone of your previous OS.

The firmware update did NOT require you to install the OS. If you read the provided links, that was clear. Quite literally everything is in the first post of that thread. (No need for 45 pages of digging...)

Not brand new, but it is not old.

Allright, going to check that out.

SSD was not working properly on Mac OS High Sierra too. Even slower speeds.
Took the gamble, I like beta's to test out. Running on my daily Macbook also.

So this isn’t a new issue, just troubleshooting now?

DriveDx report looks like it’s basically new. Guess all history was wiped?

Did you have APFS or HFS+ previous to beta install?

No, yesterday I was running Mac OS High Sierra and I got the problem, so I installed Mac OS Mojave. I was hoping that it fixed the problems. Wiped the total disk with CMD + R. SSD is APFS. I couldn't choose HFS+.

I installed carbon copy but don't know what to do? Do I really need to change to HFS+. The Mac is working now at 90% of normal speed. But write speed is 80 mb/s. So when I write multiple things, it could slow down I guess. Any solution?

Clone your entire system drive to an HFS+ formatted drive.

The High Sierra install from USB changed the format of your SSD to APFS. This is a reported issue and several have experienced it with 10.13 point updates months ago. Look at those threads. Literally cloning drive to an HFS+ formatted drive fixes everything.

Your SSD likely is not natively compatible for APFS and may need a firmware update. Unsure if they are available. Do not personally recommend or use SanDisk SSD products or SSDs with that low capacity.

I'm going to do this. I will clone my ssd to my hard drive. Order a new ssd, because I see many complains about the sandisk. We the new ssd is installed, I clone my hard drive back to my ssd, right?

Do you have any tips for a good ssd? ;) I will take a look at google!

I'm going to check if there is a firmware update, but I guess not.

Thanks for your help!

Samsung EVO 850 or 860 for SATA SSDs. Always recommend at least 500GB to maintain speed performance and do not fill more than 90%.

Allright, going to order that one.

Is it also possible that I instant clone my ssd to the new Samsung ssd, shut the mac down and start from the new one (push alt while starting up)?

Format HDD HFS+.
Clone SSD > HDD.
Remove SSD from system.
Replace with HDD.
Boot.

To reuse SSD...
Format SSD HFS+.
Clone HDD > SSD.
Remove HDD from system.
Replace with SDD.
Boot.

This process worked with 10.13.2 or .3 point update that created the same issue for several people. It should work for 10.14, but cannot guarantee. Not on 10.14 beta, waiting for release and NVIDIA Web Drivers.
