Hey everybody,

Some details about the machine before we dive into the problem: MBP 16" M1 Pro, Ventura 13.2.

  1. I'm trying to make the switch to Safari or Orion (based on WebKit) as my main browser.
I have a problem with choppy videos in Safari and I've noticed that only on YouTube. Every solution I find (enabling and disabling VP9-related settings, deleting cache, booting into safe mode and so on, haven't yielded any success). This happens both using the built-in screen as well as the external monitor (LG 35BN75C-B 35'' UWQHD VA HDR Curved UltraWide).
What else can I try to solve this issue?
  2. Speeding up videos (1.25x/1.5x... playback speed) makes the sound coming from the video sound echo-y. A Google search revealed that I'm not the only one experiencing this and since 2020 (the latest detailed info I found on the subject, there isn't any solution to this).
Has anyone managed to fix that?
Btw, none of these problems happens in any of the Chromium-based browsers I have.

Any help would be appreciated!

Orion is beta still, so you'd expect problems with it. Safari, well I don't know. YouTube is Google, and Chromium is Google, so it is expected they work well together.

Orion is based on whatever WebKit version is either the latest or the one before that, so the problems I'd face in Safari are going to be at least partially full there as well. If you can solve one, you can mostly solve the other as well.

I'm trying to understand why I'm facing the video issues specifically on YouTube and not on other websites.

The question remains: can it be solved?

I've decided to switch to Edge. Safari (i.e. Webkit) has too many problems handling videos and GIFs. I know I'll still have the problem with Edge on iOS/iPadOS but Edge is fine on my Mac which is what I mainly use. Being able to use uBlock Origin and other Chrome extensions is a bonus. I like Safari though, and if the issues are ever fixed I'll probably return to it.

I don’t know why, but Safari ist the worst piece of software on my Mac. YouTube or other streaming websites stop working completely and sometimes even my mouse stops working properly. I have switched to brave and no problems so far.

The same for me. I've moved to Vivaldi (Chromium-based).

I don't know about "the worst" but hey, everyone has his own experience I guess :)

2 billion people are using Apple devices, Safari has 18-19% market share.

If something was so fundamentally wrong with Safari, there would be more complains.
Make a new user account to see if the problems persist https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/add-a-user-or-group-mchl3e281fc9/mac
Apple sells a lot, but it doesn't mean for one sec that the product is rid of problems... "Everyone on the planet breathes air, doesn't mean the air isn't polluted" has as much logic in the correlation as your statement.

Thx for the suggestion, I'll try with a different user and see if the problem persists there as well.

Should have said that this is my personal experience.
I have set up a fresh system. I use some extensions, maybe that is the culprit but other browsers like Edge, Brave or Chrome just work fine, even with all extensions.
It is just a nuisance that I have to restart Safari five times a day just to watch a youtube video (in my case).
Recently, even my wife said that Safari on her MacBook is crashing. And she has no extensions and uses her MacBook only for office and mail.
So, in my personal experience, Safari does not give me the same user experience that other Apple software does.

Ahhh, now I see. I share the same experience...
I'd wish for Safari to give the same user experience as other browsers and other Apple software. But for now, it seems that the only solution is to default back to other browsers that hog resources like crazy. The problem gets even worse when using an external monitor and watching videos on that. Something with the rendering of videos and audio in Safari is just not on par with other browsers and engines.
