Severe Overheating HELP!!!

Hey guys,

I have been reading recent posts on ppl with overheating issues, but there doesnt seem to be any final answer on what I should do with my iMac 24" intel core2duo.

For some odd reason, in the past 2 weeks, my iMac has suddenly skyrocketed in temperatures seen in iStat. I turn it on, and within 5 mins, temps are rising in front of my very eyes...

My power temperature is ticking past high 70's... it hit 79 and i just turned iMac off. My HD bay is going above 50's, and all the GPU things (whatever that is) are up in the 70's as well. Pretty much, all dials except for optical drive are above 50 (which is at mid 40's), and many in the 70's.

I have seen the posts about increasing fan speed on my own... but I've seen conflicting opinions about that.

IF I bring it into the Apple Store, what will they do / is it worth it??

IF there is a DIY fix, does anyone have any links to previous threads on how / what to do it? A video of how to even open the damn thing would be of great help.

Try reinstalling iStat. I suspect the readings are wrong, not the machine.

Then back everything up that's important and continue to use the Mac as normal.

If it fails (chances are slim), then you can take it back to Apple.

By the way, are you talking about temps in Celsius or Farenheit?

What were you doing with the imac, did you have any ram-eating programs open?

I'm in Celsius, and the reason I know its not a glitch with iStat is because the iMac is seriously hot to the touch. The fans seem to be running, but not cooling the system down as it used to...

no ram eating programs open, even at idle the temp climbs. If i turn on the heater in my room, then the iMac temp seriously climbs (obviously).

So i try to keep my room as cool as possible, but the temp just keeps on going up....

time for an apple store visit?

or is there anything else i can do?

Reminds me off the Video Card driver problems that sort of died out in October.

Have you installed all the latest updates and firmware?

Install do Software update till there is nothing left. Sometimes after you install an update, and open software update again afterwards, there will be an update to that update!!

Temps seem normal, pisses me off I always have to change my istat to read celcius everytime i get in these threads, i live in the US. What brand hard drive do you have?

From personal experience the Aluminum iMacs are supposed to be warm-hot to the touch; this is normal.

2. Ok. So i did all software updates as possible.
3. Brand of hard drive? not sure... how do i find out? its intel processor...

Nothing changed the temperatures... but it DID do smth bad. very very bad...

my JB 1.1.3 iPod touch can NO LONGER be accessed.

i'm not as concerned about my iPod as I'm sure there will be a crack for it soon. But as for the temperatures on my iMac, is it really normal????

GPU Heatsink 106
Ambient 74
HD Bay 112
Optical Drive 97
Power Suppy 140

and the temperatures are climbing as I type this....

Sure. Seems normal. You have a different problem, its not overheating.
