i am going to buy a brand new imac soon, possibly in mid august or early sept. i read somewhere, months ago, that apple will be realeasing new iMacs in the fall.... is this true? should i wait or not?
let me know what you guys think! "D:apple:

Come back and ask this question when you're actually buying something within few days. None of us can foresee the future, it's possible that the iMacs have already been updated when you're buying yours.

Depends really on what you doing with your computer.

If surfing the web, reading email, some Office document work and point and shoot photos, then now is the time to buy.

I went to the Apple store to buy one yesterday. Then someone whispered in my ear, "refresh". I decided to wait. I rip alot of DVD's (probably going to need an external), AFLAC rips and DSLR photography so I'm hoping the refresh will bring me a quad core i5 in a 21.5" screen. Too much power really for what I need, but I plan on keeping the iMac for 3-5 years so I want the latest and greatest if I'm going to keep it that long. $1500 is a sweet spot for me. So I'm waiting.

waste of time...not helpful one bit.... i wasn't asking for a fortune or looking for a fortune teller, i was asking for an opinion....

Razeous: thanks for the advice for the one that actually gave it:) need more opinions... :) yea i plan on using it for media. i shoot a lot of Raw Photos, i just bought the CS5 (photoshopt illust and indes)the incore5 will help a lot. i wonder if the iMac will have a built in sd card reader...

So, can you buy it now or is August the earliest you can get it? It's likely that Apple will update the iMac fairly soon but nobody knows exactly when it's going to happen. Can be next Tuesday or November.

You have to give a bit more info. What iMac are you looking at? What are you going to do with it? Are you eligible for edu (and thus BTS promo) discount?

If you need it now, buy it. For most people the update won't make any difference but again, we don't know what the update will bring so you shouldn't be asking if you're not getting it soon as there will likely be more rumors as the time goes by, so in August (if that's the earliest you can buy it), there might be a lot more rumors proving the imminent release, thus my post above.

EDIT: Current iMacs are fine for photo editing and already come with SD card reader. I doubt you'll take advantage of the features the next gen will likely provide (just faster CPU and GPU)

thanks, this was much more helpful :)

well, i can actually get it now...but i wanted to wait because of the rumors... this is why i was asking. when i bought my Macbook, about 2-3 weeks later the newer models came out (the aluminum ones with the lit keyboard function etc.) i was kinda regretting not waiting, but then again not really since i was happy i had a macbook overall. i plan on using the iMac for the same reason i use my macbook, photography editing, school work, and whatever else comes in mind. i do run a lot of Adobe programs all at once i can tell you that much. i am eligible for the education discount as well! :)

btw, i was about to purchase an imac last sunday from bestbuy, the only reason i didn't was because i had left my debit card at home...:/

As you're eligible for education discount and thus able to get free iPod Touch, you could just get it ASAP. I would say either buy it now or wait till the new one. You have a fully working MacBook so it doesn't sound like you are in need of the iMac, so I would wait, that's what I'm doing on MacBook Air. I have no real need for it so I'll wait and see if the features I want become reality. If they do, I'll pull the trigger. If they don't, I'll keep waiting and possibly pick up a 13" MBP.

I think what Hellhammer was saying is that if you are not going to buy it now, then you shouldn't worry about it because we don't know exactly when Apple will update it. It would be easier to answer when you are actually about to buy an iMac.
:)

I think if you are considering now, then you should buy it + take advantage of student discount and free iPod if you can. Otherwise, I think you should try to hold out as much as you can for the new iMac. But in my opinion, I think we still have a couple months before we see anything new.
