Now that I've left the iPhone, I find myself needing MobileMe not at all, so for the next two years (at least), I'm going in a different direction. I've got everything worked out except the Back to My Mac-style screen sharing, etc.

Does anyone use ShareTool, or perhaps something else, and does it work well as BTMM? I don't necessarily use screen sharing a ton, but I'd like to have it alongside remote file sharing, which I use all the time.

Care to explain what BTMM is? I'm sorry but I can't help really as I love using MM and have an iPhone so it fits my usages. Care to also explain why you left, bad service? AT&T bills etc..

Back to My Mac

I'm sorry but I can't help really as I love using MM and have an iPhone so it fits my usages. Care to also explain why you left, bad service? AT&T bills etc..

One reason is that AT&T service is atrocious in my area. The other was that I was bored with iOS and wanted to try something new. That doesn't mean I didn't love my iPhone—I still think it was the best technology purchase I ever made—but I was ready for something new.

Maybe in two years I'll be ready to come back to it, but in the meantime I'd like to find a decent alternative to all the MobileMe services I used for the last two years (I've already got Gmail, contact/calendars syncing through Google, Dropbox, etc. Now I just need to find a good BTMM alternative).

You could also try Slink: http://slinkware.com/

It offers many advantages over both BTMM and ShareTool. (And it is cheaper.)

More than happy to answer any questions.

What about remote desktop using VNC. You have to use port forwarding in your router but one setup it is very fast.

I just stumbled across LogMeIn, which offers a free service in addition to their paid services. Also, it looks like they have apps for the iPhone and for Android to share the screen remotely. Has anyone used this?

Thanks. What are the advantages Slink offers over the other two? Also, it looks like your software costs $25 for a single license while ShareTool 2 costs $15 for one license. Am I missing something?

I'm not sure how I would go about setting this up. Would I need the Apple Remote Desktop program? I'm using a Time Capsule as my router, but haven't delved too far into the settings. Is port forwarding easy (and secure)?
