My wife & I both have our own Google calendars and we've "subscribed" to each other's. I have both my iPhone & iCal set up with both G-cals, and everything works pretty seamlessly & instantly. I have a MobileMe account, but I don't use it for syncing calendars at all.

I will second the Google Calendar idea. It works really well.

It's not the only way, but it works perfectly for me.
