Sharing disks in Mac OS 10.2.6

I have this wireless network at my house that connects 2 computers upstairs (both running OS 9.1) with a G4 iMac (OS 10.2.6). the G4 iMac has an external hard disk that it uses. i can connect to the G4 iMac from both of the computers upstairs, but i can't get to the external hard disk.

is there any way to share an entire disk over a network? i have access to the different user accounts, but not the entire drive or the external drive.

You have to login as an admin to see the entire disk, IIRC.

Select the external hard disk icon, get info and have a look at 'Ownership & permissions'. Add read and write access for different connected users: Owner (the default setting is usually read write, so this probably won't help you), group (if you log on using a user account, make sure you are part of a group and give that group read write access) or if security is not a big thing: (give guests read and write access). This last option is the most straight forward and will give you an instant result.

The ownership/permissions was already set for everyone to have read/write access. the problem is i cant even see the disk from my OS 9 machine.

when accessing the G4 from upstairs, if an admin account is used, the external drive can be seen, but a normal user can only see the individual accounts.

is there any way other than using an admin account?

For other users to be able to see connected disks, you will need to give them administration rights. (Accounts>Edit User>Allow User to Administer this computer)

That doesn't mean they can access your personal folders and settings, but they can install & remove software and (I think) delete accounts.

The only way to set this up without giving user accounts admin rights is to edit NetInfo to extend your fileserving capabilities. Or get OSX Server (limited or unlimited). OSX server allows you to set up a range of share points on different drives etc.

There are books on OSX which tell you how to turn your average Jaguar into a mean server (eg Mac OS X Unleashed at www.samspublishing.com)... though it's not something I have done.
