right,i know this is a noobie question but nevertheless i live to learn so here goes:

i have a new house mate that's got an imac and we want to share each other's mp3s so i can take some of hers that i like and vice versa

i've realised that by sharing music on itunes i can't copy hers,i can only play it

i've enabled personal file sharing and appletalk
and i've put a test file in the dropbox in the public folder
but she can't see it

also,i thought that i could just share existing folders and/or files,not have to copy them to another "shared" folder

furthermore, is there any way i can set up a password for people accessing my computer?

so,basically... how do i share files and how do i password protect those files?
this is mac to mac, no windows pcs

Do you mean you put a test file in her dropbox or yours. If yours, it is my understanding that others can drop files there for you, but can't see them. (I've never tried using the drop box, so I can be completely wrong here).
 
so the way it works is others put files in my dropbox for me to take?

how can i share my own files without having to copy them though?
 
How the drop box works is it sit's inside the public folder of the user. The whole public folder is sharable. To share a file you can drop it straight into someones drop box or you can leave it in your public folder (outside your own drop box) and they can collect it from your public folder. The difference between the two methods depends on whether you want to share a file with lots of people. If you leave a file in your public folder for someone to pick up, when they pick it up they end up copying it to their space and the original file stays in your public folder. You'd do this if you were on a large network and wanted a bunch of people to come and get a file instead of dropping it individually into their drop boxes. (Phew what a scorcher!)

If you are on a network (which I guess you must be) you can connect to their computer as a registered user (and vice versa) If you are an admin and they connect to you as a registered user that uses your password to log on, they will be able to have access to a lot more folders on your computer. If they log on as a guest they only have access to the public folders.

To connect you can go the the finder menu bar and select Go>Network and click on "Servers" and select their computer. Sometimes I find that their computer doesn't show up. In which case you can use Go>Connect to Server and type in their computer's address. You can find the address by going to System Preferences and select "Sharing" and you'll see their address at the bottom. It will be something like 10.0.0.2 Remember that to connect as a registered user you need to use the log in password that they use to log on.
 
ok,i got all that and that's fine
but if i want to share my mp3s with someone then i'd have to copy them to the public folder and i really dont have that much space to copy 25gig of mp3s
what i want to do is share something without having to copy it to a public or dropbox folder
share it from where it is
or with a shortcut to where it is

That's what the last two paragraphs were about, they can connect to your computer as a registered user and they can just pick up your files from where they are. How are you connected to the other computer? wireless or an ethernet router or directly via an ethernet cable? How many files do you have, maybe the easiest option would just be to burn them to a CD.

If she log's onto your mac through network using your username/password then she can access all your files (as if you're logged in) and personal file sharing is enabled in the sharing control panel.

For the MP3's (through iTunes) (obviously only the uncopyrighted free ones ;)) try googling Ourtunes and downloading/using that.
 
ok,done that and it works fine

is there any way i can provide them access to just my itunes library folder for example?

i dont like them having access to all my files
 
If you're both using iTunes and on the same network, why don't you use the built-in iTunes sharing?

Preferences -> Sharing -> Click "look for shared music" and "share my music"
 
cause that way you can only play the music, you can't copy it to your own computer

so,there's no way to share just a single folder like you can do on windows?
 
the best idea is to put the music in the public folder,good one man

i don't wanna use ourtunes cause if i start using more and more apps to do simple stuff then i'll load up the computer and i want it as clean as possible
