Sharing internet connections

I've tried searchng & can't quiet seem to find what I'm after so I'm sorry if this a repeat of something else that has been posted.

I am due to move in a month & will be sharing a broadband connection (the broadband is witih AOL). I need to know how to share the connection, I know the modem will be plugged into my friends pc as it has a USB connection. I the want to run the network cable from his PC to the airport express (as I'd sooner not run loads of cable around the house.) & continue using the internet via the airport if possible, as I have a iBook & I'd like to continue surfing wherever I want still.

Also can the email be set up so the different email addresses go to different computers on the nework or not? or can this not be done with alis'

What are you confused about? The Airport Express will share the connection without a problem. As for email, not sure I understand what you want to do. When a connection is split, each connected computer is provided with their own internal IP address that is distributed by the router (or in your case the AE), which in turn takes the primary IP that connects straight to the internet and splits it off from there, which means that you're accessing the internet through the internal IP assigned to you.

The computer sharing the connection needs to have internet connection sharing turned on, and the Firewall setup (if it has one) to allow traffic from the Network card to get to the internet, Mail, or whatever services you need.

The PC sharing the connection will need a Static IP address on the Network card setup to share the connection (you can try DHCP but I have had bad luck with it), IE 10.0.0.1 and the Airport Base station will need to have a seperate IP address, IE 10.0.0.2 with 10.0.0.1 as the gateway.

Set the Airport station to have DHCP enabled (gives out IP addresses), and from there you should be set, Provided The PC has Connection sharing setup correctly, and it will have to be on for this to work (computer cannot sleep, or Hibernate)

If it's broadband, it more than likely has DHCP, so therefore setting the PC to a static IP would cause problems; unless you're referring to keeping the PC pointed to a static IP assigned by the AE?

You are correct, but perhaps I didn't type my post up clear enough.

No you Don't set a static IP on the connection going to the Cable modem, but the poster stated that the computer connecting to the internet and sharing the connection is using USB (NOT ethernet) to talk to the Cable modem. Therefore my comment on setting a static IP address on the Ethernet connection is intended to be the card that is connected to Airport and or the Macintosh computer.
