hi,
a few days ago i started thinking about sharing my DSL internet with maybe some neighbours or bypassers. i have an extreme basestation and a powerbook.
sharing via the AE basestation is no problem of course, but what i am thinking of now is a bit more ambitious and complicated:
you know those public commercial WLAN hotspots where you can access the network but only see one webpage until you enter a code or something to enable web-access?
this is partly what i am thinking of. except for the code and necessity to pay for it.
just a webpage that loads automatically (from a dedicated old G3 running panther) when someone is using my WLAN and requests a webpage for the first time.
maybe you know some dial-up ISPs that do so and thus always redirect your starting page to their own homepage. (freenet.de[isp] is doing so here in germany)
all i know by now is that this can be done by setting up a transparent proxy server. and of course that this should be doable with panther and some knowlege about this stuff.
my knowledge stops here :-(
does anyone of you know of a similar project?
are there any tools for that out there? or tutorials?
a place to start searching on the web? google didn't do it :-(
this would also be nice for places without wireless internet access when you have your powerbook with you. you could create an airport network, enable your built-in apache, and everyone else that comes and logs in could (at least) browse your personal homepage. they could even leave a message in your guestbook or stuff like that.
(i know WE have rendezvous, but thats not the same)
any hints are very much appreciated.
greetings from berlin,
mykuki
