So this whole netshare situation got me thinking

i currently have a ipod touch. is there an app that will pretty much turn it into a usb wireless dongle for my computer which does not have wireless internet capabilities?

i ask as right now, i get internet by sharing my macbook's connection with it. so to not have to have my macbook hooked up for internet on my faster pc would be nice

It's an interesting idea. While I'm sure that hardware could support this, I don't think that the current API allows for that kind of active connection through the USB cable. That said I suppose that the jailbreak community would have a better shot at it.
Unfortunately I think that the audience for such an app is fairly small, being that you can buy a dedicated USB wireless adapter for under $40 that would probably do a better job.

Probably won't happen, as AT&T don't allow tethering with the iPhone. If you could connect it as a wireless connection, technically it would pick up the 3G connection if it was connected. Now, if they could block any access to the carriers network while tethered, then maybe. I don't think Apple would see that as a useful addition, especially with current USB wireless devices so cheap.

I was under the impression that the SDK did not allow for you to use the 30 pin connecter at the bottom of the iPhone or iPod touch...

I could be mistaken though.

1. He's talking about iPod touch, not iPhone.
2. You can share internet from iPhone to your computer.

So basically, you're wrong on many levels. Read more.

The way I read i-John's post* is that such an app would run on both the iPhone and the Touch. Depending on how such a theoretical app was written, if run from an iPhone, the shared connection could be from 3G rather than WiFi. However, This could be coded around to avoid the use of 3G.

As for the sharing your 3G connection from the iPhone to your computer, due to the terms of service section in the contract, owners of NetShare are in the clear and AT&T will just have to accept them using the iPhone to tether the connection. However, for now that hole is plugged. Until it is available again, there is no way for people to obtain an 'authorized' app with this functionality. Any unauthorized app doing this, is on questionable ground.

*Sorry if I'm putting words in your mouth ;)

Dumb question: Where can I get Netshare?

Unfortunately it was pulled from the app store over the weekend. The developer seems to feel that it may be back in the near future, but for now your out of luck unless you jailbreak.
