Sharing large family photo collection.

I have just finished scanning and organizing my late father's family photo collection. It is about 8000 plus photos. From 1942 to 2000. They are already up on flicker for the family to view. But with the new flicker design they can not be displayed the way I like. As jpegs the collection is about 20GB . I was thinking of making a few copies of the collection and putting them on usb drives and passing they around the family. But I know everyone does not have photoshop or lightroom so it will probably not be a great idea. It would be also great to view on tablets etc.
So now I am thinking about an online album again. (or offline) Short of setting up my own website I am looking for suggestions.
I have the photos grouped together by year, and each year is in chronological order with all the metadata filled in. So what I would like the on line album to look like is each year as a set and inside each year the photos for that year with the metadata.
 
What is wrong with a different set for each year on Flickr?

As far as money goes your not really going to get a better deal than Flickr at the moment.
 
I've just been looking into Adobe Revel which offers a great browsing experience on Mac and iOS as well as the option to share web galleries for anyone to view

Nothing is wrong with a different set for each year on Flickr.
But now the set are displayed in order of uploads. I did the scanning over a two year period. there was slides, color negs and B&W 2.25" film to scan. I started with the slides, then negatives and finally the 2.25 film. I started uploading when I had a few years worth of slides, so but the end the uploads were not in chronological order. I do not see a way to reorganize the sets I have.
I did have it set up correctly in the old flicker but that is gone.

Surely the order should have remained the same?

Where are they in a correct order?

In the old flicker you were able to change the layout of you photostream page. I had mine setup to display my collections on the side.
Now the Collections are still there but you need to go to the three dots and select it. It is not that intuitive for family members. Hopefully this will change.

I was only a pro member for a short amount of time but what is the difference between a collection and a set?
 
Put them on a NAS. Synology makes a great NAS and offers mobile (phone and tablet) apps to connect to said NAS. Plus it's easy to create a photo gallery website using the built-in software. My friend's Dad does this with tens of thousands of photos. It's really simple and effective.
 
Build a website with Wordpress on Bluehost for around $5 a month. You get unlimited storage, you can do unlimited IMAP email accounts...etc. as needed you can password the access.

So why not give your family members the direct link to your collections, instead of to the photostream?
