So about 6 months ago I purchased a new 27" iMac and used migration assitant to move everything from my black MacBook. Everything went well and got all the data switched over.

I am new to mac and not very experienced for some background info. The problem I first had was the computer names for the iMac was set to MacBook and the actual macbook names switched to MacBook (2). I figured out how to change that, simple enough.

On going problem is that now on the iMac I am set to admin but cant view other users folders they have the minus sign in the bottom corner of the folder and some folders and files have the Name "Staff" for permissions. The only users should be myself "TJ" and my wife "Laura". The MacBook is fine with just her and I as users but the iMac is goofy with "staff".

I tried to call Apple Care but the guy there said it wasnt a big deal and not to worry about it and provided no further help. I am not worried about it but still want it fixed.

Any help would be great. Ideally I would like me to have full admin over all folders on the computer and my wife to have read only for the shared folder and read and write on her files.

Thanks TJ

I just checked the macbook and I was wrong the "staff" user is displayed on there as well. When staff is on there my wife is not. So it just say Me, Staff, and everyone.

Thanks TJ

in Terminal enter the commands

ls -l ~
ls -l /Users/Laura

and post them here. this is my home folder which are the default permissions (dont worry about the +)

by default only the owner the home folder can read/execute all folders except Public and Sites which are read/executable by all users.

well yes. just wanted to check your home folder's permissions but we need to see the other account's permissions. they will probably be the same with only Public and Sites read/executable by everyone.

i presumed the other account was named "Laura" but it wasnt found. substitute with the correct name.

Ok so this where the solution maybe for the wierd users. My wife on the MacBook user name was Table (nickname) and then on the iMac the user name is Laura. The only users on the iMac are "TJ" and "Laura", but I used the command ls -l /Users/Table and got this...

So nothing is showing up for "Laura" even though that is the user name on the iMac, but I am getting some for "Table" but "Table" isnt even account on the iMac...? Must have carried over from the migration assistant transfer.
