Sharing URL to Messenger using iOS share sheet doesn't work?

Recently (not sure when, but I'm on 14.3) if I use the share sheet to send a URL to (Facebook's) Messenger it doesn't send as expected and nothing appears on Messenger.

I'm sending URLs from Safari, Apple Music, YouTube, etc.

It enter a comment with the URL then the comment is sent and appears in Messenger, but no URL.

Can anybody else confirm this works for them?

A problem with Messenger? Or iOS?

Funnily enough, I noticed the exact same issue yesterday when I was sending some URLs from the Amazon app through Facebook messenger. The links quite simply did not get sent.

Now whether it’s down to iOS 14 or Facebook messenger, I don’t know but let’s be honest they’re both utter crap so it could be either or both.

I have issues with messenger and screen going dark or black on messenger it’s been issue since iOS 14.4 update

I am experiencing the very same problem. When sharing to any app but messenger, it works alright.

Seems to be a Messenger issue as believe Android users are having similar issues. Lot of features have been removed from Messenger recently so not entirely sure what is going on.

I don’t know if these issues are connected, and I would assume not so I don’t want to derail this thread, but I no longer get PayPal notifications in messenger even though it is set to do so. It hasn’t worked since December.

That's a good point. It's probably related either to this bug or the features that have been removed from Messenger due to EU probing.

My last PayPal receipt in Messenger is dated 17th December 2020.

I just installed the latest Messenger so let's see.

From what I remember, your date coincides almost exactly with mine. I’ve deleted the messages now so I can’t confirm but it was roughly that time. Thanks for confirming.


I’m all up-to-date, and I’ve made two PayPal payments today and didn’t get a notification for either, that’s why I deleted the whole PayPal conversation in the messenger app. Didn’t see the point in keeping it as it doesn’t work.
 
if I share any link in any app or circumstance all I get now is a dull link. No way for the recipient to know what I’m sending. Not even a title. Before there used to be an image and a title “resolved” from the link. In all messaging apps including Messenger.

Did they change something in iOS or is it in my settings so I need to activate it?

I think it's connected to latest iOS and MacOS. I looked back in my SMS, Messenger and Messages history and can see thumbnails in all posts from september and then it all stopped.
 
It's difficult to understand if we're talking about the same issue. Can you post sample images?

Messenger has removed features due to an ongoing battle with the EU law. That could explain the lack of some "link preview thumbnails" in that, which I'm also missing.

Though I still get them in iOS Messages.

I don't get the previews in any messaging app. I'm in the EU.

I resent a link with SMS that did have the preview as an example. The problem now is that I get a lot of "what is this?" as a reply and before it was no problem understanding what I was sending. And it's nice when scrolling the history to understand what that post was about.
