Soooo i dropped my first gen iPhone and the screen shattered. It's still under apples 1 year warranty. Any advice on what the hell to do with it? Will apple give me a discount on a 3G? Sell it on ebay? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I know it costs 250 to replace.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. Its the one thing I dread happening to mine.

You dont say whether youre in the UK or US. Im in the UK, and I'd be claiming on my home contents insurance accidental damage cover if it happened to me.

If it's just the glass screen you can get them on Ebay pretty cheap. Comes with the tools to replace it as well.

My 1st gen had a cracked glass screen and I ordered one of the screens, still have it in fact. But while waiting for it to get to me I noticed the phone would not sync with my computer anymore. I took it to the apple store and they told me that because it was dropped or whatever the reason for the cracked screen that my warrenty was voided.

I said ok, but can you fix it. The apple tech took the phone in the back and came back with a new one and told me he was giving me a get out of jail free card.

This is slightly off-topic, but on the way back from the pub on Saturday night (yes I was a little bit drunk) I dropped my day-old 3G iPhone on the pavement. I watched with my heart in my mouth as it clattered down the road in front of me.

Shaking with terror, I picked it up again and examined it closely under the street lighting. It was absolutely fine. Not a mark on it, works perfectly, still does.

I'm not gloating, I was *very* lucky, but I can't help feeling these devices are insured by God himself sometimes.

Usually, unless you manage to drop the buggers on something that sticks up a bit, or land it flat on its face, it's usually pretty good with drops. I've dropped my first gen a few times, and it has yet to show a scratch :)

I dropped my first generation one loads of times & the case has the dents to prove it. Always worked fine

Not dropped the new one (yet)!

I've dropped it loads of times, i guess it hit just right. I am in the US, so it sounds like my best option is to get a replacement glass screen and repair it myself?

I have "a friend" who missed his pocket and dropped the phone. Magic impact to the sidewalk shattered the screen. I, I mean "my friend" took it to the Apple store and told them that the screen cracked, then got worse, and here we are. Not exactly a lie, it did crack and get worse, but within a millisecond. They didn't ask if it was dropped and I didn't volunteer to tell them I, I mean "my friend" had.
The guy behind the counter looked up the serial number, tapped a few keys on the computer, wrote some notes, asked if the phone had been synched today, then swapped the SIM card to a new phone and handed it to me, I mean "my friend" and done.
Before you give up, it's worth a shot at the Apple store. They might be a little less willing to swap this week with the launch, but you never know, and it doesn't hurt to ask. If you really want to get into it with them, you can point out how all their sales guys were selling the screen as "unbreakable" when you bought it. I know they were saying that around my store plenty even after this one was broken.

I'm going to take it to the apple store later today, hopefully I'll be as lucky as you're "friend" haha

"My Friend" dropped his 3G too...

I also have a friend who dropped his brand new 3G on day #4 and smashed the screen. I've been trying to get someone to replace it for the past week. I have another appointment with Apple tomorrow - if that doesn't work i'm just going to pony up the $299 and get a replacement.

One note that if you bought it with a credit card, you should check with them. My AMEX for instance has a 90 day no questions asked policy on purchases. Unfortunately for me, my AMEX wasn't swiping in the Apple guy's hand held machine when I was purchasing, so I just gave him my debit card instead. And of course, my debit card doesn't have purchase protection. Didn't think twice about using the debit instead of the AMEX until I picked up the phone and saw with horror my screen...
