I noticed my battery life decreasing a lot, I felt something is wrong. I looked up battery usage and Shazam was doing 50% damage and been working in the background 14hrs.

I have used Shazam in the past and it has not been having this behaviour, my understanding is that it will not use the microphone until you tap the Mic button to identify the song. I even have background refresh disabled. Whats going on here?

Perhaps check your Shazam settings, as I have it installed (its widget too) and it does not even show up in my battery usage stats.

Have you turned on Auto Shazam?

I registered because this post was the only one I could find online from recently. I just saw the exact same thing as OP on my iPhone SE 2020 with background app refresh and auto-shazam disabled. Despite this Shazam had used 17% of my battery and run for 4.5 hours in the background. Unacceptable.

I don't know about Shazam but I have found with other apps that I had to turn background refresh on and then go into each app and turn background on and then off again - then turn general background refresh back off in order to stop battery from reporting usage in background

But I want background app refresh for some apps e.g. FB Messenger and Gmail. How can apps circumvent this? This nullifies the whole purpose of individual background app refresh.

I think its a bug, I closed Shazam by swiping it up and the issue never came back. I have used Shazam later on, issue did not re-occur. I have background refresh for some apps too, everything is fine.

Do you think the bug is caused by Shazaam or iOS? Not optimal if you have to remember to close Shazaam every time you've used it.

I don't know but after I restarted Shazam it never happened again. The bug might have been initiated by any reason, which is unknown to me, so it does not mean that every time you launch Shazam it will come back. Plus iOS was updated and so was Shazam, so the bug might have been fixed.
