Hi everyone,

Full disclosure: I’m the developer behind Shelfinder.

Shelfinder is a small macOS utility I’ve been working on that introduces a floating shelf integrated with Finder to make everyday file handling faster and more intuitive.

It allows you to temporarily drop files, folders, images, PDFs, and other assets into a floating shelf while you work, then move or copy them anywhere in Finder using drag-and-drop. This is especially useful when dealing with multiple Finder windows, desktops, or scattered files.

Key features:
  • Drag files from Finder into the shelf
  • Drop them anywhere in Finder or other apps
  • Visual organization in a clean, native macOS UI
  • Support for groups of files
  • 100% local operation (no cloud, no sync, no tracking)

The idea behind Shelfinder is simple: reduce friction in common Finder workflows without changing how macOS works.

If you’d like to try it, you can download it here:

I’m happy to answer questions or hear feedback, and I’ll use this thread to post future updates and improvements.

Initially downloaded without .dmg extension. All worked as expected after changing the extension and installation. Timely appearance for Shelfinder since I'm carrying out an iCloud clear out. Still to work out what the paid for pro version will do.

Thanks a lot for the feedback, and thanks for flagging that as well! Glad to hear everything worked as expected after the install, and perfect timing for an iCloud cleanup indeed.

About the Pro version: it unlocks a few extra features focused on power use, like extended limits. The free version is fully usable, and Pro is mainly for users who want to push the workflow a bit further and support ongoing development.

Also, there’s currently a Product Hunt discount coupon available.

Is there a reason why you don't list ALL the features the pro version unlocks? I for one won't even consider purchasing the app without knowing what I'm buying... even if the only benefit to purchasing is goodwill.

Fair point! Tks for bringing that up.
The free version supports up to 3 files, while Pro extends that to 50. We’re also working on Pro-only features, starting with built-in image compression for PNG/JPG and similar formats.

Apart from being a bit cheaper, how does Shelfinder compare with Yoink? In other words, why should I change from Yoink?

This feature is present in numerous apps (Default Folder X comes to mind, along with Yoink and Pathfinder), so it basically comes down to implementation, appearance, and price.
