Do macs have a shell client built in or is there some type of software like putty to connect SSH or Telnet?

application->utilities folder->terminal

from there you can type telnet <address> (without <>) or ssh <login name@><address>

this is the unix shell and you have all the power of bash, if you are using panther or tiger. I believe older ver use tsch by default.
