Shift key fell off my macbook pro!!

:confused: Help!

The left shift key has come free of the keyboard of my Macbook pro.
nothing appears to have broken (although I do live with a 3year old and a 1 year old so anything is possible). Any tips on reattaching it?
 
Yes but it doesn't stick even when trying to line up the "bits" together. No satisfying click. Am also worried about being too vigorous in case I break something.
 
Go see your local Apple Service Provider and ask if they have any spare keys for you.

Once when one of my cats walked over my iBook keyboard the F9 key fell off, and all the little plastic bits underneath was broken so I couldn't jest pop the key on again. I got a new F9 key free of charge (they didn't have a iBook key lying around, only a PowerBook key, so my iBook has a "silver tooth", but O don't mind, it only gives it a bit of personality - and I'm using my new MacBook 99.99% of the time anyway... ;)).

Call apple send it to them.
 
I wouldn't send away a $2k+ machine just for a lost key. Just take it to a store, and get the key replaced. My Apple store takes one of every model, rips it up, and save the pieces for replacement...:p
 
Assuming the keyboard is like the ones on the PowerBooks...

If there is an Apple store near you and they have the key they will replace it for you. If you are not near a store or they don't have the key for some reason you will have to send it in (they will not send the key to you). You would have to be without your computer for about 1.5 days in this case (which sucks big time, but is just how it is :( ).
 
The key is not lost, it is just not connected to the rest of the machine!

I will take it to a local apple dealer and let them have a go.
 
my macbook pro is only one day old!

My right-hand shift key popped off tonight, after only one day's use. How is it supposed to go back on? It has two metal pins in the back. Are they suposed to go through the little metal hols in the machine? I can take it to the Apple store, but if it's a DIY fix, that'd be better. Thanks!

Again, as all the people said above, you could take to an Apple Store and get it fixed, unless you've tried putting a key on a KB before. I can't do it. There's some trick to it.

Thanks much for this link. The first thing I read there was to make sure nothing was broken, and this suggestion was enough to get me to actually look closely at the back of the keycap. Turns out one of the little clip things is broken. Apple store here I come!

truth is, its a simple fix. probably under warranty even.

so dont worry about it. isnt like the logic board needs replacement.
 
Apple Store fixed it in about 90 seconds, including going to look for the part. It was about a 40 minute round-trip walk. I'd never been inside the store, so the trip wasn't entirely a waste of time. Hope it doesn't happen again.
 
It sucks that the closest Apple store to me is approximately 2100 kilometres, and requires either a ferry or a plane...

So if even something as small as a broken key happens to me, I'll have to send it away.

Yeah don't send it in its not that big of a deal. The apple sotre should take care of it for you.
 
my right shift key half came off my MBP too.. recently. i dont do much typing, but on this occasion I was...

after a bit of fiddling it clicked back on, I think I just aligned it, and then pressed firmly down on it to click it back into place.

A month ago I had a sticky "K" key which made a loud "click" noise. I brought it into the Apple Store and they said they reseated the key and it was fixed. But now i have a semi-functioning "T" key which will require a new keyboard because I popped it and it didn't fix it. For a problem like yours, the Apple Store will be able to fix. If they ask you to be w/o ur mbp for a week, refuse and have them call you in when the part arrives.
