I think another question to consider regarding the shipments of stock to each store is the ratio of 4gb vs. 8gb models each store will receive? For example, if an AT&T gets 40 phones would that be 20 4gb phones and 20 8gb phones? Or some other kind of breakdown?

I am worried that there will be an abundance of 4gb models out there because I am sure by now Apple has gotten word from consumers that 4gb is just too small.

Does anyone think that Apple - in order to get rid of inventory that they may not want anymore now that they see most people want an 8gb model or higher - will make the 8gb models more scarce and send out more 4gb models? The logic being that those people desperate for an iPhone will eventually just breakdown and buy an 4gb model since they can't find an 8gb model. Apple ends up being able to bleed down their 4gb models so they can focus on a new line-up of 8gb models and up.

they wouldn't change from 4-8 gigs to 8-a6 gigs so quickly unless they announce it before launch..

talk about bad press...

I think since the phones are priced pretty closely, it will be similar to the PS3 launch. I would guess 70% 8GB and 30% 4GB. Maybe higher or lower, but more 8GB models should be shipped then 4GB.

I hope you're right. I have maybe seen 2-3 people on these boards that want a 4gb model. I don't want to wait all day in line and then come to find that all of the 8gb models are gone.

It is like opening up the box of doughnuts and all of the good ones are gone so you have to eat the lemon-flavored bran muffin. :p

If all the 8GB models were sold I would not purchase the phone. 4GB would not cut it. Just make sure you are among the first inline. The early bird always gets the worm!:D

I would think there would be a hight number of the 8GB than 4GB. I'm sure market research would show the higher capacity device is in more demand, but they would still have the 4GB out there for the first time buyers out there. I'm guessing 70%-30%.

Just my 2 cents.

I don't know why companies do that but you see it more and more everyday. It's obvious that MOST people will go for the 8G and a few will settle for 4G or just go for it from the beginning.

Personally, I'll get an 8G or none at all. It's something I'm going to be stuck with for a little while so I want to get the most out of it.

It's really just a way to get you for $100 more easily. An upsell. They know most will go for 8G.

I think the purpose of the 4 GB is just to have a price point under $500. Everyone talks about the iPhone as being a $500 phone, not a $600 phone. Despite this, most will spend the extra $100.

i would agree...

8GB or nothing at all!! I think it should be like 60GB or 80GB IMHO

I find it a little odd that they call it their best iPod ever, yet the high-end model only allows for 1/10th of the usable memory of the last version... hmmm.

AT&T's return policy is 30 days. buy a 4gb if they only have it, then when they get an 8gb in stock exchange your 4gb for the 8gb and just pay the $100 difference.

...of course this is assuming they'll keep their normal return policy for the iPhone.

Except for the obvious reasons, video and audio, why would I want more space than 4GB for my email, addressbook and calendar along with surphing?

8 is enough, but so is 4

Being very experienced with spending money, I can tell you with confidence that SAVING the 20% is a better than spending it if you don't really need to.

If you are switching midstream from another carrier, you'll be spending that $100 again. So that's $200 more than the $535 phone. The phone is actually $535 or $635 because there is a mandatory fee to sign up for the service.

It's a total brainer.

In anycase, Apple will have a new model out in two years after all of our (their customers') R&D and since I'm not at all a movie or television buff, I'll have made enough money on the $100 (make that $200) I saved now in order to buy that one in the future.

No. If anything Apple will just stop making or reduce production of the 4GB units and let supply dry up, similar to the way Sony let supply of 20GB PS3s play out. Apple is not going to sacrifice sales of the 8GB, as that IS the model the overwhelming majority of people want. They realize the 4GB model is a waste. Plus there is more profit in the 8GB models. They cost Apple about $20 more then the 4GB model, and they pocket an extra $80.
