Shipping a cMP

I think I'm finally ready to give up and sell my Mac Pro on eBay, but I am dreading the shipping. The person I initially bought it from packed it pretty good, so I want to do it the same. The way they did it was they had attached smaller boxes on the top and bottom of the computer to keep the feet and handles floating.

I'm thinking of stacking cardboard pieces on the bottom of the box, putting the cMP on top so the feet are not touching the bottom, putting cardboard on top of that between the handles, and putting stacked cardboard on all four sides. Doing this would give about 1 inch of clearance between the box and feet/handles on bottom/top.

Anyone have experience with the $50 OWC box? Any opinions, or horror stories?

I think the only reason that worked was because of the corner protectors. They aren't perfect, they should protect it from anything but a pretty good drop, but if the corner was dented, it would ruin the feet. Ideally you have some crushing space on the corners, kind of make it float a little. Like @verdejt I've also received them wrapped in bubble wrap like that, and they have been damaged.

What I have seen, is some white styrofoam under the feet. I at least feel this would help if it was dented on the corner, but I think the best is to have it held into place by the sides, not the feet, leave something that's crushable at the corners/feet.

It was a lot of bubble wrap, between the box plus the bubble wrap and all the angle brace pieces I decided to make a special trip to the city dump just to get rid of the waste all at once.
On top of the angle bracing the whole box was wrapped in that commercial plastic shrink wrap stuff.
BTW I have received 2 macpro's from OWC and would say their shipping box and included packing system is first rate. So good in fact that I have kept their box and packing system in case I ever need to ship a MacPro.

I understand that it's a lot of bubble wrap, but if the box were dropped on the corner the bubble wrap really wouldn't do much. All the impact would go straight into the feet. The corner protectors were really what protected your Mac Pro from any drops, as this put the force along the sides of the box, not entirely on the feet. Even with all the bubble wrap, if you put it in a single wall box and dropped it, you would damage the feet. The bubble wrap gives some cushion, and does help, but mostly keeps it from moving around in the box and getting damaged moving around in the box. The other packing you show distributes this along a larger area, including the much stronger sides and would be much better. Unfortunately this isn't very easy for someone to do themselves

I have seen many many Mac Pros that have been shipped, most are just fine, even packed very poorly. My suggestion is just do the best you can, get a double wall box, and try to keep the impact from going directly to the feet, and it should be fine.

I got one from an eBay vendor that, like DVWarehouse, filled the box with foam. Worked great, except I had to spend a good hour ridding the Mac Pro of particles of foam that were clinging to the machine inside and out.

Recommendation for those using the foam method: Plastic wrap/bag the Mac before foaming.
 
Ooh once I got a mac pro wrapped in only bubble plastic in a soft box... Came completely busted. You need to put a liquid foam outside from all sides so it does not move. I found that a box from Advantech HMI display works too. It comes with 2 boxes and a foam form for the inner box inside the second box.
 
Well I dug through my collection of many keyboards and could not for the life of me locate that one...
What's really odd is that I have no recollection of ever giving it or any keyboard away.
Sorry but I can't help you with a name...

A1048 i know quite well, had few of them. Maybe my favorite keyboard to this date, but the one in the jbarley's picture is much more shallower and, while still plastic, doesn't have much in common with the one you're mentioning.
That is if we're talking about same models. :)
