Shockwave flash problems???????

Hi, I am on the internet 12+ hours per day and about every 15 minutes or so I get errors saying "not enough memory to open shockwave flash try adding more memory to Internet Explorer" when opening pages.

What should I set the memory on for IE (5) (is that the most uptodate version available for my OS 9.2?)

I have tried increasing the IE memory up to 30,000 and it still doe it. To remedy the situation I just quit IE and start up again and its fine for a while then another 15 or so mins later it happens again.

It's like something is building up inside and blocking it all up then by restarting the IE program it is all clear to go again- almost like a hoover (vacuum cleaner) gets bunged up after so long then it's fine for a while after you empty it.

Is it to do with my mac memory/ram? What should that be set on? What about virtual memory?

Firstly you need to dump OS 9.2 and get at least OS 10.3. This will solve all of your memory problems. Using IE (an old outdated browser) on OS 9 (an old outdated OS) is a recipe for trouble.

But if you HAVE to use this combination for whatever reason, set your virtual memory high enough that you don't get these messages anymore (but make sure your hard drive has LOTS of free space--this alone could be what is causing your problem--you might have virtual memory turned on but have a full hard drive, thus causing your memory controller to come searching the full hard drive looking for temporary memory space but finding none.)

That said, with 640 mb of ram, you should NEVER have issues with memory running out in OS 9. BUT, OS 9 is famous for having memory leaks, which means that over time of having the machine on, the memory that is supposed to be released to go back in the pool of open memory after processes complete does not release for some reason. After a while more and more of your memory is spoken for even though nothing obvious is using it. The easiest solution is to simply restart the computer.

In fact, your problem sounds like one where the computer is not being restarted regularly (OS 9 needs to be restarted at least once a day in my opinion).

Hi, what you say really makes sense. I have noticed ages ago if you go to apple (top LH corner) -> 'about this computer' in the box the bands creep along and the memory used on the OS & IE get higher & higher, then if I restart they go back down. I do restart a least 1 time a day usually. I am now considering X but have been put off as I thought I will have to relearn big chunks of the programmes like Photoshop/Quark & Illustrator as the X versions are different?
My largest unused block says 560mb so it seems I have plenty of memory?
I have turned on the virtual, that was off so that may be better.

Would any of these problems relate to slow internet, I have 2mb broadband, I have been on 3 other peoples computers (all PC's) and theirs are all faster?
