Has anyone had any luck setting up shortcuts with whatsapp to sent a whatsapp message upon an event trigger? Ie upon arrival at a destination? Mine doesnt seem to work. Even when I run it it opens the app and shows the text on whatsapp but wont. Is that expected behaviour?

Never tried that particular 'shortcut'. However, force close the app, then try the shortcut again. I wonder if you'd have a different experience then...
