Shortcuts flaw

Hi

Running iOS 12 GM on iPhone X.

I’ve downloaded the ‘Workflow’ app to play around and I’ve created a basic shortcut linked to Siri which calls a friend.

I’m aware there may be an update come release date.

The only time I use Siri is from the button on my steering wheel - play music, call Steve etc.

When I’ve tired to use my new shortcut it says “Calling Steve” and then after a moment pause it says “you’ll need to unlock your iPhone”, which isn’t safe or possible whilst driving.

Have I got something switched on/off that could be causing this?

I was filled with such promise when I heard about Siri Shortcuts but if this is intended behaviour, then it’s useless to me; I never use Siri away from the car.

Any advice appreciated!

I suspect it’s related to only being able to see messages on the lock screen once it has scanned my face.

I’d prefer some sort of functionality whereby the phone knows you’re connected to a car bluetooth and allows certain functions to work without needing the phone unlocked.

I can understand this behaviour when not connected to a car bluetooth as messages could be read by Siri.

I’ve had mixed results with Siri shortcuts. I’ve been testing the actual shortcuts app and most of the shortcuts don’t require the phone to be unlocked. So far the only one I’ve come across that requires an unlock is if you want Siri to pull up a pass, like a Starbucks pass, or movie ticket pass from the wallet app. Other than that I can’t recall a time I’ve had to unlock the phone before Siri would run the shortcut.

Today Great Clips released a update with Siri shortcut and I was able to schedule a haircut appointment from Siri without unlocking my device.

I think the ability for shortcuts to run in the background is only possible for apps built against the iOS 12 SDK. Otherwise they are just launching the app, which requires unlocking.

You’re using the Workflow app. The Workflow app needs to launch to run its workflow. That app is old and will become Shortcuts on Monday. Shortcuts can do background execution

A little off topic. But one thing I am a little disappointed in with the Shortcuts GM is the fact that you can only trigger HomeKit scenes and not individual accessories.

The workflow app isn’t build with iOS 12 SDK. The problem is that the workflow app isn’t intergrated the way the shortcuts app is. Wait till Monday and I bet your problem will clear up.

Apple apps have access to API’s and features that 3rd party apps don’t, shortcuts may be an evolution of workflow but it’s an internal app now so can do more.

I’ve had to unlock the phone to use the Chamberlain MyQ app to open and close my garage doors. Their reasoning is safety, so a special case.

A little off topic. But one thing I am a little disappointed in with the Shortcuts GM is the fact that you can only trigger HomeKit scenes and not individual accessories.

My suspicion is that if you could do this it would render the Home app largely superfluous. They probably want to see how Shortcuts is received before essentially duplicating efforts.

I can understand this behaviour when not connected to a car bluetooth as messages could be read by Siri.

I would love if iPhone would allow lock to be disabled when connected to a trusted Bluetooth device or WiFi network. Other phones allow this.

No such luck. Newly-created shortcut in the ‘Shortcuts’ app with the same action(s) requires the device to be unlocked.

Personally it’s useless to me for certain actions. It’s unlikely I’d pull over, unlock my phone and then invoke Siri when I could just pull over and perform the action manually.

Yes it’s unfortunate that the Phone action needs confirmation first, even in Shortcuts. There are definitely some actions that can be done in the background now though.

What actions are you doing btw? If it’s just calling someone, Siri could do that before Shortcuts.

Interestingly if you run a shortcut that Calls someone from the lock screen widget, although you get an alert to confirm/cancel, you don’t need to unlock. But if you use Siri from the lock screen, you do. Odd consistency

Totally get what your saying.

To be fair, you can already use Siri to call contacts without using Shortcuts and without unlocking your phone. Just tell Siri to call Steve, if it is in your favorites it will call that one, if not, Siri will ask you which one. No unlock necessary and it works great.

I do understand there may be non-native Siri commands that this won't work for and hopefully Apple will give us more control on when authentication is required.

I’m having the exact same problem. I used to be able to press the voice button on my steering wheel until Siri came up and say send text message or read my schedule. Now I get “ You’ll first need to unlock your cellphone first and I wouldn’t advise doing that while driving.”
The only change to my phone is an update to the operating system. I did download “Shortcuts “ but never ran it.
No other changes.

Any ideas?
