Nah, they just need to get their heads back in the game and start focusing more on ALL their products, not jus the small mobile ones. Maybe they need to hire more people to do this? I'm not sure, but they need to do something.

Jobs said over a decade ago that he will always be looking to where the market will be rather than where it is. Like it or not the world is moving more and more towards portability, and having pretty much ceded the market for the WIMP interface GUI to Microsoft during the Sculley era Apple are now concentrated on trying to dominate the touchscreen phase. The Mac is still a major cashcow for Apple, but it cannot stand out from the competition in the same way an iPad can as Macs are tied to working with other peoples' technologies and standards to remain relevant.

I'd like them to put more resources into Mac development too, but short of minor speed bumps or extra graphic options there's not much that they can add to the likes of the Mac Pro unless Intel bring out new chips/chipsets. In the meantime the consumer and prosumer level Macs are getting more frequent hardware updates, so it's obvious that there are still a large number of people within Apple very much concentrating on the platform.

Maybe not different companies, but Apple needs to stop making all the OS X team code for iOS.
I agree.

Splitting the company would duplicate resources unnecessarily (i.e. personnel, facilities, ...), thus increasing the costs. If this happened, we'd see price increases, which is at the limit going by the complaints on pricing that already get posted.

What I would like to see, is enough personnel hired to deal with the shortage of developers and validation testers (stop the bugs before they make it into shipped products, and potentially get products out a little quicker).

That's simply your opinion. Another view is they are allocating resources where they see fit.
Yes, but it's a bit of a problem when fixed resources are spread over an increasing project count.

So far, I've not seen a substantial hiring spree for developers and validation test engineers to make up for the shortfall. They have hired a few I suspect, but not many. Not enough to keep the product cycles low.

So their decisions would be based on profitability, as they're in business to make money. If that happens to be portable devices like the iPhone and iPad, or the portable computers, then that's where they're directed.

lol you're a few years late.

I complained a few years ago about it. At the time they had a separate blog just for the iPhone where they could post inane rumors about possibly being able to change your background (OOOO!!!)... eventually all that crap ended up on the macrumors front page, especially now that actual "MAC RUMORS" are so scarce.

Nowadays I'm sure most of the people here probably aren't mac users at all... or at the very least they come here to talk about the iphone/pod.

FYI: my post complaining about it? most people gave favorable responses, but IIRC Arn trashed it.

Yes, mot iPhone and iPod users don't really like Macs. They all use ... um .... *cough*Windows*cough*.

I see absolutely nothing Mac Pro (or even iMac related) on the Apple homepage, the focus is solely iPhone and Mac mini.

Notice, "Mac" gets a little bar button tucked away at the top.

^ sorry this happens for the most part every time something new is released. Whether it is the iPhone, iPad or iMac. They will have it displayed with a rather large picture. This isn't just for the iPhone.

Screw that. They should stop all advertising of the iPhone. They should remove it from the online Apple store and pretend it doesn't exist. In fact, you shouldn't even be allowed to buy an iPhone unless you walk into an Apple retail store backwards, approach a clerk (without actually facing him), and say the secret password (something complicated in French--if you mispronounce it, they jump you with their iTasers and ship you to Foxconn to assemble iPod Shuffles).

Anything else is disrespecting macs and mac users. I'm offended they're not doing this already.

And unless I'm very much mistaken, Macs also feature on half of the secondary news stories towards the bottom of the page. So what exactly is your point?

I think Apple's core buisness is getting unclear. First it was computers. Then the iPod came and now all the other mobile stuff.
Do not underestemate the number of people that buy Mac's after they first bought a iPod or iPhone (I am one of them :). The more Mac's sold the more Apple will invest in them. So it goes both ways.

But as said before on this post. Apple has to keep the enough attention to there Mac's and not use all company's resorces on the mobile stuff.

if i had any of this gear, but not all...

i'd probably agree (on 1st impulse) ;-)

which site claims the ipad, or will that split into its own ipadrumors.

imaterumors :)
ijobrumors go.. where?
ivillianrumors for news of iballmer, ipolpot, ietc

since forum users can bookmark the forum "tribes", eg, https://forums.macrumors.com/forums/7/, maybe the inewsrumors+irumorsrumors side already has similar, perhaps tagging?

YES, they most definitely should.

Put all the iGadgets in one and all the computers in the other.

I suggested the same thing for MacRumors. Make TWO sites. MacRumors for the computer, and iRumors or iPhoneRumors or iGadgetRumors for the other stuff. This place is inundated with iPhone or iPad stuff lately.

here i'd been thinking that iphones(?) or ipods are merely tools to boot your mac...

but really, i recently skimmed an article in a newspaper (I read it on paper), about applecorp increasing buyups ("increasing" as measured" by number of buyups per time period, but perhaps also be total or % of valuation or gross or aig's predicted operating viability)

so, ijobs is idiversifying. something about joining the fray, against google, ms, involving clouds and somesuch.

While I do agree Apple tends to focus on one specific product at a time (particularly with regards to marketing and corporate agenda). It would be a mistake to spilt it into two companies for the simple fact that Apple's products all integrate and are developed together.

There's more to iOS and Mac OS X than just their respective GUIs. The underlying technology of both operating systems is now developed by the Core OS group. All the Core Services and new APIs are shared between both Mac OS X and iOS.

Over the next few years, we're going to see more and more iOS and Mac OS X applications and features mingle between the two operating systems.
I see absolutely nothing Mac Pro (or even iMac related) on the Apple homepage, the focus is solely iPhone and Mac mini.

So? Why would Apple advertise their oldest products on their Web site front door?

I'm not sure it'd be a great idea, because I think it'd create an identity issue where people will be confused about the two companies, and even if it seemed to be, I doubt SJ would let it happen.

Because if anyone recalls, Apple WAS split into two companies for around a year or less around 1997.

At the time, their mobile device (mobile in the sense of the iPhone) was the Newton platform, originally marketed by Apple itself in 1993. A few years later, under Gil Amelio's tenure, a separate company was formed to handle it, which was called Newton Inc.

And so when Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997, one of the first things he did was to reabsorb NI and also kill off the entire Newton project.

Although, it could have been because the Newton was not a hit success in the first place, unlike the iPod and iPhone etc., so it's not an IMpossibility.

Exactly. I may be a newer user on this site (but a long time reader), but as a long time Mac user and interested person this is getting exhausting. After reading some of those iPhone related news, I sometimes read some comments to get some inputs and different opinions. But the way people write to each other is getting more and more rude and less factual. ("Apple sucks!" "No, Google sucks")

To the initial question: I believe that Apple has been managing the financial crisis very well. The management has done a good job to earn money in very bad times. The downside (in our point of view) is, that they had to make some choices and assign some priorities. And if you ask me, they managed very well. But hey, I want some new Macs :p
