After viewing this there is no doubt in my mind mind that Apple should be spending a few percent of their hundred billion dollar cache of cash on a rise in their Foxxcon worker's salaries.
I wonder how much would be the cost to Apple to raise wages of the floor workers by 50%
I think the working conditions are fine with regards to the rest of china. The work seems hard but not overly so in the cultural context and the villagers seem content.
Yet I feel that Apple could raise their wages as an altruistic gesture. I do want to emphasise that I'm not suggesting that Apple is doing anything wrong but I am suggesting that they have the opportunity to give their workers a bit of love. (Better than paying a dividend to the shareholders anyway)
I've just done a very rough estimate based on say 140,000 workers' wages who work solely on Apple products being paid an extra $1 an hour (a decent increase considering the base wage) for 60 hours a week coming to about $3 billion dollars a year.
It is also interesting to note that the Foxxcon suicide rate which gained some traction in the past, is below the national average.
