Should Apple split up iTunes?

I'm thinking that as Apple adds more and more video content to the "music" store, that they may need to split it up. Kinda like, have 2 seperate stores. In your sources window in iTunes, it would have Music Store, and then it would have Video Store.

Then, maybe they could find a better way for you to organize all of your videos, and either make a seperate app just for video's called iShows or whatever, or change the name of iTunes to something like iMedia or something.

Just some thoughts.

That's how I would prefer it, I think iTunes is getting pretty complex and a bit bloated, with music, video, "radio", podcasts, and all the iPod functionality. But Apple seems to want to have it all integrated.

Yeah I think eveentually it will be all split up adn stuff but fror now I'ts the good old iTunes with junky video and stuff. And yeah I def agree with you thats its getting really fcomplex
 
Just call it the iTMS - iTunes Media Store - problem solved. :cool:

But yes, Apple may indeed have to address this issue in the near future, in order too keep things from getting to confusing and cluttered.

they won't change iTunes to iMedia because everyone now knows the name of iTunes. if they suddenly changed it to iMedia everyone would think that its some kind of rip off!! they didnt even change the colour of the dock icon from iTunes 4 to 5/6
 
I wish iTunes didn't include videos in the library when you're browsing for music. When I'm browsing through Artists, I don't really want Lost showing up in the list. Most annoying is the way video tracks will end up in smart playlists unless you specifically exclude them.
 
the "tunes" part of iTunes could be seen as not just music, but anything that you might "tune in to". including radio, t.v., etc. it's a reach but maybe that's what Apple is hoping to fall back on.

This annoys me as well, I especially hate that after I added videos to my library my "Never Played" smart playlist got huge. That bothered me because I typically put that playlist to random so that I can get through the music I've just added, and it makes me so angry when I have to stop what I'm doing and skip the video that starts playing.
 
I think they can fix those issues with some minor interface tweaks. iTunes 6 has already been out for over two months, so an all-new iTunes 7 should be out any minute now :D
 
I'm still not overly convinced about the whole video iPod thing but I do see that Apple had to do it to avoid falling behind. Steve Jobs always said that video on the iPod would only happen if there was lots of available content and so this is why the video store came out. However, in Britain (where I live), it's a distant poor cousin to the US version, only harbouring music videos and Pixar shorts for a whopping £1.89 each (over US$3). This is not an incentive for me to buy a video iPod (I've tried out the new iPods in Apple Store Regent Street and I think the interface lags behind my very responsive B&W 4G iPod).

I do agree that the videos get in the way when trying to browse through normal music. I also don't like the way these videos play in iTunes (not very intuitive), having sampled the odd video podcast or two, but I can see that this is a good move for Apple in the way it is increasing the proliferation of MPEG4 (specifically H.264) into the mass market and keeping the spread of WMV at bay. Hell, even my mobile phone can play MPEG4 and not WMV videos.

However, just as I choose to turn off videos from the source list in iTunes (thankfully there is an option), I would appreciate the idea of separate stores and think this is a good idea. But then, I think there will be big changes announced in MWSF'06 next month - subscription services I'm still weary of - but we'll see.

Probably because to do so would mean having to add, maintain, and keep synchronized a bunch of redundant iPod code in iSync, whereas it already exists in iTunes (I'm assuming iTunes needs it because iPods can view and modify this data). I agree with you on the concept though. I'd say iSync should get all the iPod code (or keep it in a separate library) and iTunes would call its API to do music/video syncing.
 
For those of you frustrated with videos (and in my case podcasts) showing up in your library, use the view menu to show the Search bar and then click "Music" and it'll only display your music when you're in the library (so long as you don't close the search bar then).
 
I would like iTunes specifically for music. I hate having video clips sharing the same library folder as my music. Or at least give us the option of having more than one library. I'd like a music library, a podcast library and a video library and easy way to change location to other than my home folder.

Perhaps Apple can roll the purchasing of movies into Front Row instead.

A simple tabbed interface at the top of iTunes could easily solve this.

A tab for Music, a tab for video. Maybe a tab for podcasts.

Then the respective Store link in the source pane takes you to the dedicated store.

This way everything can still be housed under the iTunes name and application, maintaining brand recognition. But it would keep everything separate. I dont know about you guys, but I HATE the fact all my playlists and stuff are in what is supposed to be my iTUNES library.

However, I DO think longterm it would be cool for Apple to give video content its own named store...
 
I just did the thing where I selected the Music tab on the library screen and the vids are gone. I like that a lot, but now since it is not set on "all" my audiobooks are gone. I like it better than having to see my vids in the library though.
 
i think they should have a tabs in the store for music and video.....kinda like safari.... and have that same tab thing in itunes when browising if u want music click the music tab if u want video click the video tab. (or give us the option)
But i don't think this well happen until they have a much larger selection of different shows.
 
I wish they'd make another program and scrap itunes. But yea I think they should keep video different from music. Put music videos under music though.
 
iTunes is no longer an app I can have in the background while working, its far too bloated (as im writing, iTunes is using up 20% of my CPU and its just playing music). Hopefully songbird will solve my problems, but I hate to not use the official software. The iPod merits the inclusion of video, but I say it should be seperated, especially if it removes the new interface.
