Should Apple unveil a new iPhone before summer?

I watched a video on YouTube of the Nexus One and it looks really nice. I sat there thinking to myself "Wow, my iPhone can't even do that!" With all these new Android phones, Apple is starting to fall behind. Summer is really far away and the iPhone will be old news by then. Of course when Apple unveils a new iPhone it will blow everyone out of the water, but what will they be able to include that other phones don't have already?
 
I'm curious....

What can the Nexus one do that that the iPhone can't? And of that list, how many can be added to the iPhone by an OS upgrade?

If you stand on good credit (pay your bills on time), AT&T users are eligible 20 months into their contract for normal upgrades - way before July 2010.

iPhone users need to get off their high horse. If you want the latest and greatest $h!t when you already signed a contract w/ an iPhone, then pony up more money.

The only iPhone users who should have gotten an 'early upgrade' deal 12 months into their contract were the original users since they paid $600 for their iPhones.

I think since the 3GS seemed like "Snow Leopard" type upgrade (ie. Not much end user features compared to iPhone to iPhone 3G), that Apple should go for an early upgrade (April/May).

People who purchased the original iPhone were eligible for an upgrade whenever they were eligible time-wise from their previous upgrade. When they purchased the 1st gen iPhone, it was a non-subsidized purchase and did not effect their upgrade cycle.

They could have just upgraded phones, and the iPhone came out a week later, and they could have purchased it without penalty on their contract, since it was a full-price purchase, not an upgrade.

On the other side, if they were eligible for an upgrade, they could have purchased an iPhone a week before the iPhone 3G came out, and still have gotten the full subsidy price of $199 for the 8GB 3G, or $299 for the 16GB 3G.

I agree with your sentiment for the most part. But, I'd be a little disappointed because I waited not upgrading to the 3GS so that I could upgrade to the next generation without paying any ETF.
 
The upgrade cycle is not just 20 months if you have good credit. I picked up my iPhone 3g on July 28th, 2008 and I was eligible to upgrade on December 28th of this year, at 17 months. I'm sure they just want me to upgrade to get more money out of me, but I'm also waiting on the new model this June/July.

if the Nexus one is so great and awesome then don't delay don't wait or hesitate buy your nexus today! :D I'm sick of every new phone that comes out is supposed to be the new Iphone killer or better then. I am yet to see one that is better all around. When it does come out if I want it that bad I will get it! regardless of if everybody else thinks it's great too.. Apple will release the new model when they are ready regardless of what others say. there are many reviews comparing the Nexus One and 3GS read them and decide. ;)
 
Apple won't release a new iPhone before their normal June/July schedule. They will tell you about iPhone OS 4.0 at next week's event which will serve as a nice response to Droid/Nexus One.

I do think they can no longer do an annual upgrade going forward.
 
The rate of other manufacturers catching up with, and in some ways surpassing the iPhone may make one think Apple might shorten the refresh cycle. However, as a company, it is not in Apple's nature to play ball with the same rules. I predict approximately yearly upgrades. Can you imagine all of the bellyaching people who wouldn't qualify for upgrade if they came out more frequently? I still have a headache from all the 3G owners who were bitching June 19, 2009.
 
Yes, they should. I am tired of my old 3G phone. I want the 4G phone so badly..
 
I hope they will, I've had my 3G for 18months, I mean there is nothing wrong with it but I wouldn't mind a refresh - OLED screen, better camera and a little more horsepower. :D

Why? The new model would still be available when the AT&T contracts came up for renewal, so nobody's missing out.

Or are you saying "I can't have a new one yet, so nobody else should be allowed to"..?
 
I think Apple should wait until they're well and ready to release a new iPhone. About the worst thing they could do is release something that's underwhelming. With increasing pressure from all sides of the market, they're going to need to release something truly revolutionary to remain the be-all-end-all benchmark for entertainment-based smart phones. Give them time, I'm sure they've got something extraordinary coming down the pipe!
 
Personally I think the current iPhone 3Gs is fine, o.k. battery life is poor - but to be honest I expected that.

Biggest issue I have is with 02 (UK) as their 3G service is often 2G or Edge, even when it's 3G it behaves like GPRS. Maybe if they merge the mast use with Vodafone it might be o.k.

That 1 GHz is paper specs. The Nexus One with that 1GHz processer is barley faster that the iPhones 3GS 600 MHz processer. If Apple were to put that processer in the iPhone it would blow the Nexus One out the water.


Apple hasn't done a update since October 8. The reason behind that is because the next update has code in there that's has to do with tablet. Later this month Apple again will again be even farther out front of everone else.

I don't think Apple to worried about Google and all there android phones. Android 2.1 wasn't a big update from 2.0 like how 2.0 was from 1.6. The Nexus One isn't even selling googles already drop the price of that phone $100 two weeks after that phone came out
 
I think there is a lot of hysteria surrounding the Nexus One. Sure, it is a good phone and a great alternative to the iPhone. However, Apple has no reason to rush out the latest iPhone because of it. I personally think an iPhone 4G in the summer will be more than sufficient.

The hardware could obviously do with improving like the processor, camera etc. although I think the major updates with happen with iPhone OS. The OS is now starting to look dated. One feature of Android I really like is the notifications bar at the top, stuff like that would be great. It also seems to be getting really cluttered now with just pages and pages of apps. Surely, the OS needs an upgrade now as more stuff is happening than when the iPhone was first released.

I also think Apple needs to do a MobileMe Lite version. One with say just email, contacts and calendar push sync minus the galleries, web storage, etc. Google offers all this for free with Gmail, Gcal, and contacts. I could quite easily do without the web pages, galleries, iDisk... I never use them and can get them from elsewhere and probably cost the most for Apple to provide because they use the most bandwidth.
 
Depending on their contract with ATT, the only way I can see Apple announcing a new iPhone early is if they announced a Verizon phone. Serve a similar purpose as their original early announcement, freeze the Verizon phone market, allow people to hold off on using their upgrade, until it can be released.
