Should I ask for a replacement? It's possible to get a good screen, without yellow?

Hi.

I received my iMac last week. It's a BTO 21'5" i5.

I really really love the machine and the S.O. I was scared about gameing performance, but I runs really well.

The only thing that I am concerned about is the screen. It has some dust under the glass, but I think that it is normal, and dust will enter before of after.

The problem is the yellow tint, and some dead pixels. Well, it's a 1920x1080, so, pixels are really really small, and hard to see.

But the yellow tint...it's worse. The thing is :

Should I ask for a replacement? Apple said me that they will send the one and I can keep this while the new arrives. But, if the new one is worse than this one?

The yellow tint is only a bit, and I could get another one with more tint, or noisy HD...

Does it worth the headache of the replacement process? It's possible to get a non yellow tint?
 
If it annoys you, get a replacement. If you can live with it, then you should consider keeping it. I would give it few days and then decide, usually you're extra pedantic with things when you get them but after few days, you hardly even recognize them
 
Is this one of the newly updated machines? Is yellowing still a problem on the latest version?
 
Good question. And one I was kindof in a 'round a bout way trying to ask in another thread.

Of the new 21.5" models, has anyone actually received a replacement machine (where yellow was the issue) that has NO yellow tint? My guess is that, like me, Apple wears you down to the point with the replacement process that you are willing to just "take what you can get" - i.e. one with perhaps minimal yellowing, or not as bad as the previous 5, etc.

I know for me personally that at this point (replacement #3) I will probably just accept a certain amount of yellow as normal and "as good as it gets" with the next one (if it ever arrives).

I feel that I have now been edumacated that I shouldn't be too picky when it comes to Apple displays (coming from PC world using mainly Samsung (or better) displays).

Of course, the thing that attracted me to an iMac in the first place (other than the cool OS and bootcamp) was the awesomeness of the displays I got used to in my ipod touch, iphone 3gs and 4, and iPad displays (although the ipad is not that good in the sunlight).

Oh well. Perhaps when Apple ditch LG the iMac displays will improve?

Let the flames begin (as I have also learned to expect whenever I post on this forum). :)

They ALL have some yellow. Why do you think people end up replacing their iMac as many as 7 times... and STILL there is yellow.

Stop looking for it and you wont notice it. A replcement will not solve this problem.

Then why are 98% of the new 27" iMac displays "perfect"? No tinge at all. I think the problem is more widespread in the 21.5" this time out, which is the reverse situation from the late 2009 models. Saaaayy, you don't suppose that Apple/LG swapped factories when they had their shutdown last February to address the screen problems? Perhaps now the 21.5" model displays are coming out of the same factory that produced all those terrible 27" displays?

How did you come with the perfect 98%? Last time I was checking it was 99%.

Truth. I went thru 9 iMacs and ALL had yellow tinge. Have also done the yellow tinge test on countless iMac floor models at various stores and have NEVER seen one without yellow tinge. If you can't live with the tinge then return it, don't exchange. It's a design flaw they ALL suffer from to varying degrees.

I think it's in the looker's eye. Reading stories that some people had to edit the colors with Photoshop to recognize their tiny amount of yellowing is pretty ridiculous. Some people are just more pedantic than others. I bet if you did the same yellowing test with 3rd party monitors, most of them would suffer about the same "issue" if you were as pedantic as some people are with their iMacs

I have uneven backlight and some image persistence but seeing that they don't affect my use by any means, I don't think it's worth it to start calling Apple about display replacement. And yes, I do have AppleCare but still

I've come to the conclusion that if you want to see it and let it affect you, then it will. Otherwise, just live with it. Life is not perfect. Start using it and the issues will disappear. If you can't get over it, buy a different CPU/monitor setup. Don't bother wastingyour time with returns. As many have said, if you dont do the "test" you wont notice it. Sounds like a good policy. You can always find what you're "looking" for.

-My 15" MBP has a fine display with no yellowing or gray banding.

-My 23" ACD has a fine display with no yellowing or gray banding.

-My first 27" i7 iMac had bad yellow tinting and bad gray banding, and for extra fun it had a cracked LCD.

-My first replacement 27" iMac has enough yellow tint to bother me, not enough gray banding to be an issue (though it is there) and not cracked LCD.

I really tried to live with my replacement iMac, but I can not ignore the yellow (piss like) stain on the lower right portion of my screen.

-I really hope #3 is good enough.

For what is it worth, I have looked at many 27" iMacs in stores and have seen some near perfect units. One with slight yellowing, (hard to detect) and one with no yellowing at all (that I could see). I have as many units that either have bad gray banding, or bad yellow tint.

I will not give up...... not soon anyway.

See the trend you posted?

The iMacs really do have an incessant problem with the yellow tint. It is unfortunately in varying degrees, but there nonetheless.

Good luck and don't wear yourself out seeking a perfect monitor. It ain't happening.
 
I just bought mine yesterday. I visit a lot of sites that have lots of white (I.E.-This one and facebook) and can't really notice it unless I'm looking at the yellow test pattern. If I'm watching a movie trailer or just surfing the web it isn't really an issue.

That's true.

But now that I know that it's there, I am always looking for it. It's specially noticeable with gray tones.

Replacement will arrive on Wednesday.
 
Replace it.

You paid good money for an overpriced piece of aluminum.

The least they can do is make sure your product is perfect.
