I have been planning to move from windows laptop to MacBook Pro for a while now as I am very invested in the Apple eco system.

I basically use laptop everyday for basic tasks like web browsing checking emails, office 365 and occasional photo editing in photoshop/light room. I would be using mostly apples native apps.

I have read so many articles about avoiding first generation products but as I will be using mostly native apps and basic tasks, should I really avoid first generation or should I be okay?

I have picked up first generations of many of Apple's products over the years and it has been a mixed bag. The first Core Duo Intel MacBook Pro was fantastic. The first iPad was amazing, but the iPad 2 was a big step up. The first Apple Watch on the other hand was slow on day 1.

In this case you might want to wait for the reviews next week, but I think for Office 365 you should be fine (although I find office weirdly sluggish on Mac compared to Windows) and Lightroom/Photoshop will run now and get faster with native versions soon.

Apple's "first gen" problems with hardware usually happen when there is a significant re-design (completely new display tech, hinge design change, fan design change, etc.) or a completely new product design / category (AirPods Pro being the prime example ATM).
The Apple Silicon Macs use a somewhat similar design as the previous ones other than the logic board, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
I'd simply wait until ALL the apps you intend to use have been vetted to really work well for your intended use until switching.

Thanks for your replies.

Not too fussed about a complete redesign as I really like the look of the current MacBook Pro’s ?. My current windows laptop has got bigger bezels than the current MacBook Pro does so would be an improvement for me.

Also sounds like the next one might be 14 inch Mbp with new design and maybe mini LED screen so that would be effectively another first generation type product

It depends on how much you are in a hurry to buy. If you can wait, you will definitely get something more mature next year (as Apple will presumably be updating the Macs it has already transitioned to newer Macs with newer Apple Silicon SoCs). If you have to buy now, then I'd still wait until reviews and teardowns provide more insight as to what might be going on with these new Macs. We don't know anything about the M1. We don't know its speed, we don't know how one on a 13" MacBook Pro differs from one on a MacBook Air or from one on the new Mac mini. I'd at least wait for more things to come to light about these new Macs before spending tons of money on one.

The chassis being used isn't really first gen, just adapted to use AS. That's probably where the most potential for issues would come from. Maybe just hang back a bit for reviews and to see if any trends develop, but I don't anticipate big problems with these machines.

Thanks for reply. You have all said wait for the reviews which is think is very sensible. Not long to wait!
