The only reason to be bummed out would be if you bought it in the past week or two. Otherwise, you bought a fast computer that will suit you well. Heck, it still is a fast computer that will suit you well no matter when you bought it. So no, you shouldn't be bummed out. There is always something better around the corner, and if you can't come to terms with that then you need to buy a Packard Bell so you can brag about your antique.

Well - you have a great machine now - and I'll admit (I just ordered a C2D MB and saved loads of money not having to upgrade the RAM or HD) - yesterday the same machine (Core Duo) with the same specs would have cost me AU$500.00 more.

However, you won't save anymore money 'now' by ditching your current machine to a new C2D - if your MB does all that it needs to do for you - then you were not gypped at all.

hey... I definately wouldn't consider it an issue.
the other evening I read a comparison between CD and C2D, and the step up in performance is very slim. Much less significant, infact between other new intel chips.

I was pretty shocked when I saw 'up to 39% faster' on the apple site, with the Macbok Pro C2D release, however the small print shows that this is compared to G4 powerbooks. C2D is NOT 39% faster than core Duo.

Intel keep a steady market by numbering performance upgrades regularly. And apple are very skillfull at wetting our appetites with new gear. Together they will truly make suckers of us all.

... saying that... I am considering upping my 2GHz macbook to the 17" MBP. Mainly due to 13" being too clostraphobic, glossy not being to my taste, 5400RPM drive not fast enough, and 64 shared graphics is not kicking it for me any more. the announcement of C2D is simply a bonus.

anyway... why do our heads in regarding how big the numbers on the screen say our machines our, when we could be having fun using them
^_^

I few years ago, the top of the line PowerMac was over $7000. It had 2 1.42GHz G4 chips, not much RAM and HDD space (by todays standards), but it was a ripper of a machine. Fastest G4 PowerMac ever made. A few months later, the G5 PowerMacs came out and blew the G4 PM out of the scene

point; you can hold out forever, because there will always be a new and better machine out there. I have the baseline MacBook with extra RAM in it, and it is a brilliant machine which does everything i need it to do. Unless you do hardcore video editing or the like, the C2D chip probably won't have much to offer you. But if you were into video editing etc, you would probably have something with a bit more substance than a macbook anyway :p

You have a great machine, and its still fast. Be happy with it, and save the money for an upgrade in a few years time :)

Be of good cheer my man! You will be in the first wave to embrace the next generation of technology. You also have a fine machine. If it is working well for you, and allows you to be productive, that can be better than that? Some folks post about 'future proofing' their purchases. You cannot do that, especially with technology. Make an informed decision and do not look back.

Welcome to the wonderful world of "PC's becoming obsolete as fast as you buy them."

Sort of a shock for Mac users whose machines tended to stay the fastest for 6 months to a year.

Now you will only have the fastest Mac for a week to a few months. :p

just thinking... I remember a friend liked using the G3 iMac's at collage for graphics work. Mainly photoshop. It was a while ago now, and it was around the dawn of the G5 powermac. His reason for liking the G3: 'loading bars give me time to actually think about what I'm doing'

...seems pretty strange but there's some sense to it. It's similar, in a way to working with analogue technology... for example, physically cutting and sticking film. Because it is a more time consuming process, and more difficult to 'undo' should you make a mistake, every decision is considered much more.

Alternatively, final cut: it's easy to make cuts etc quickly, because if you can get it wrong, u can always go back (but usually don't). Either way, decisions are usually rash and not considered.

so in conclusion, a slower machine makes you a better creative.

My plans are to get a Mac Pro early next year but I know that once I buy it the dual core will be replaced but the new "Quad Core" CPU's. You just can't win.

Well i'd be bummed, infact, it's specifically why I waited for the C2D.

And don't really buy that C2D isn't much better, most benchmarks have a 10-25% increase, which is actually significant.

With that said, depending on exactly what your doing, odds are the CD is going to be able to fulfill your needs, after all it's still an excellent machine. Top of the line doesn't stay top of the line for very long, and as others have said, when you get a computer now a days you need to understand that before it loses that shiny new feeling for you, it'll be outdated to someone else.

Also odds are if your on these boards now, you were aware an upgrade was coming up, so at some point you must have made peace with the pending improvements.

Quite true - we were all aware of these impending updates (whilst knowing 'when' is hardly an exact science). After last Tuesday for example, a few ppl waiting for a MB update just went ahead and purchased a core duo anyway (they just couldn't wait). So you can't really blame yourself if you so desperately needed a computer you couldn't wait - you just needed it.

As it happens if the MB wasn't going to be updated within the next 2 weeks - I would have had to purchase a revA MB too. There is only so long a person can keep waiting if you really need a portable.

Only if you get bummed out that you bought a 2006 car in June and the 2007s came out in August, making your 2006 car 'obsolete'.

<hint> If that's the case, you're gonna spend the rest of your life bummed...</hint>
<hint2> This is particularly ineffective when applied to girlfriends/wives... don't moon over the latest model, really, don't</hint2>

I was one of the people that got there MacBook pro CD, just less than two weeks before the CD2 came out, yes I was a little bummed but I am sitting here with one hell of a laptop that is doing all I need it to, and faster than I need it to be. yes its human nature to want the biggest, best, fastest & newest of anything, but by the time this machine is to slow for my needs, there is sure to be a faster better specked one out, better than the CD2!! And if I keep telling myself that Ill keep happy;)
And next time I am looking to buy a new mac Ill keep an eye on this forum for rumors of when the next new step up will be out.:)

You know, this is excellant advice. I don't know why I am like this for gadgets and machinery but not anything else....I must try to not be that way so much. My Powerbook is still humming along merrily well. It does everything I need it to quite well. All I ever use my computer for is Word, Email, the web, iPhoto, and some light iMovie. Yet I have been lusting over a C2D Macbook for months. I play games on my 360 and will on my PS3 when I can find one at list, probably around this time next year, lol.

I really don't think I can justify an upgrade right now, except just because I want one or whatever....thanks for the post....my life is easier and cheaper now...:)

Should i be bummed out that i have CD and not C2D MB?

Yes you should be bummed out.

Ok not really. If you bought it within the last week or so, I can understand, but hey eventully these C2D will "suck". I mean how about when the Core 3 Duos come out. Then when the Core 4 Duos come out, the Core 3 Duo's will suck. Then when they come out with the Core 5 Quads the Core 4 Duos will suck. When they come with the Core 6....nvm you my point :p ;)

Don't sweat it, once my G5 was top of the line! Now it's not. Just because the Mac Pros are out does not make my G5 any slower than what it was pre Mac Pros. As long as your computer does what you need it to do, and can still run the software you use reasonably well, then your cool. :)

P.S. I am not making any claims about new "Core 3,4,5, etc Duos/Quads", that was just an example.

I don't get the complaint. You feel like you got screwed because a computer with newer specs came out. Did you just step off a spaceship, or did you just not notice the technological progress we've been going through over the past "few years"?

Well i'd be bummed, infact, it's specifically why I waited for the C2D.

10-25% is a nice stat.....it's APPLE's stats. Tell me what the benefit is in absolute time? I do photography and a C2D is surely to speed things up a bit, but the amount of time I'd save on most processes is probably 0.5 seconds, give or take. 25% faster for a task that didn't take long to begin with is still not a lot of time. I'd rather have the faster computer, but I wouldn't be bummed about owning a rev A MacBook. I own one, and I'll just have to wait an extra 0.5 seconds to export a RAW file as a JPEG, because that's how much time I'm likely to save even if LR operates 20% faster.

And it's just the policy Apple has been keeping. Through the whole iBook and PowerBook line they released new revisions for the same price. At one point they released a faster iBook and dropped the prices. But that's just the way it goes. There's never a good time to buy a computer. Never. Better stuff will surely come along. And besides, if they always raised the prices when they start selling newer stuff, your MacBook would've probably cost something like $4,065,203,532,345,652,875.25. That's a lot of money!

People should really just decide, when they want to buy the computer and not look back (or is it forward in this case??). Use it for the years it's good enough for you, and repeat! But seriously I doubt that any Mac would go that badly out of date and obsolete in any less than 2 years.

To put it in perspective: My younger brother got his Base Macbook RevA a week and a half ago. He doesn't care because it's basically just a processor bump.

It's capitalism and consumerism, it's what we live for. Since General Motors realise once everyone in America had a car, they'd be out of business, corporations have constantly improved, or in many cases, just simply changed their product line. This thus creates a new market, and therefore new consumers.

Technological change, so long as we have enough energy (not long left now), is the driving force for capitalism and new markets. This is the system we live by, thus if you're going to be 'bummed' every single time a newer product is released, then you'll be sorely 'bummed' indeed. Anyway I digress.

I think the C2D processors are not that much different, though I'd like to see some proper benchmarks. It was about time Apple installed a GIG of RAM in their laptop line as standard, but it's not a big deal seeing as RAM is easily upgraded by the end user. I'm still satisfied with my Rev.1 MacBook!

You should be downright pissed off. It is obvious this was entirely personal. Apple completely set out to f you over hard man! Hey...list your CD for sale right away and hope to make some profit for such an obsolete machine. I mean, really you should get on that because after all, this personal attack made against you by Apple is the worst of all personal attacks I've seen in a while. I completely hope you can sell your machine off. Have you tried the marketplace yet?

Depends how long you want your MB to last. In my case, I need this MB to last at least 4 years, so I'm really pissed. I bought this MB 5 days ago and I'm going back to get a C2D MB. Plus I just found out my right speaker died out on me so I'm definitely returning it. I hope I don't have to pay the restocking fee cuz my MB does have defect (just going by the receipt). :p

Man what a support full bunch, I bet any of you would be making the same thread if you were in the same position. I've had my CD macbook for a week and 2 days, this is my first mac so I'm happy with the machine but still a little bummed. If I'd know (other than random rumors) that they'd be out so soon, I would have waited.
