Should i Buy 10.5 or 2nd Gen 12.9 IPP

I currently have the first generation iPad Pro 12.9 and I’m looking to upgrade to the second generation 12.9 or go with the 10.5 inch I guess I just need a little bit of guidance from people about what you guys think I use my 12.9 for absolutely everything I do Netflix Internet YouTube periscope email Documents TV you name it I do it on my 12.9

Well, how well do you like the size of the 1st gen Pro 12.9? If you don't find it too big for your use, then sticking with the same form factor is probably fine.

I'm having this same dilemma. I use my first gen 12.9 as my primary computer. Given that, my first thought is that I should stick with the 12.9 size to have the larger screen. I've noticed that I use my 12.9 mostly at my desk with a stand and Apple Magic Keyboard. However, on second thought, I think the main reason I use it at my desk most of the time is the size. I think with a smaller iPad I would be more likely to use it while lounging. So I think I'm going to give the 10.5 a try. I think I will miss the larger screen at certain times, but I also think overall I will enjoy the 10.5 more and use it more like a tablet most of the time.

This is exactly my situation - I use my first gen 12.9 with a magic keyboard at my desk, and I think it's because I find it just too large and heavy to use elsewhere, with or without the keyboard. It's a lovely device but after using it a while I think it's just too big. Plus I really don't use the larger screen as an advantage - I tend to dislike multitasking and even tended to keep my apps in full screen when I had a mac laptop before the Pro. So I'm thinking the 10.5 could be a good balance between having a screen large enough to use for most tasks and having a device compact enough to use away from my desk.

Same situation here. I have had the 12.9 first gen since day 1 and got used to the size pretty easily but I wanted to give the 10.5 a try. There are things about both that I like though, now making my decision all the more difficult on which one to keep. In the back of my mind, the specs of the 10.5 tell me that it is a powerful beast and can handle anything coming down the line but I also wonder, with the first gen 12.9 being relatively new tech, it can be that far behind. I have the ASK for my 12.9 and I have moved away from using it to using the software keyboard which is really nice on the larger screen. You do notice a difference by not having to bounce around like on the smaller keyboard, but I guess the upcoming version of iOS adds more functionality to the keyboard so this may be a non issue anyway.

My work is about an equal 50/50 mix of mobile and desktop work as well as watching movies and reading news in the downtime. Such a tough decision with two fantastic devices to choose from!

I agree. Sometimes downsizing from having a larger display to a smaller can be somewhat of an adjustment for some, because of what they were used to with a larger display. Ultimately, I see quite a few iPad users who have downgraded from the 12.9 to the 10.5, actually go back to the 12.9 iPad because they thought they would want a smaller display, when they realized the larger display was more preferable than they originally anticipated.

I'm so used to the bigger 12.9 now think would be too tough to go smaller. You can get so much done on the bigger screen

My 1st gen IPP 12.9 regularly used at home and travelling out of town. The IPP 10.5 is more convenient for me to carry everywhere each day.

12.9 only, I owned first one since 2015 and it was a great device for watching Exactly the word WATCHING.
Then upgraded to 207 second generation and Still enjoying the big screen for (again) Watching!

I have both. However I'm finding I'm using the 10.5 alittle more... it's the sweet spot for power and portability. Anyway, I love both I never liked the 9.7 screen - the 10.5 is perfect, huge difference imo.

Good decision. I've been thinking about whether or not to stick with my 1st gen 12.9 Pro or side-grade to the 10.5 Pro.

Lately I've really been pushing the limits of productivity on the Pro and growing increasingly frustrated with the limited functionality of the apps compared to their desktop counterparts. Even the simplest of tasks are made more cumbersome because of iOS apps. For example: something as simple as applying character styles in iOS Pages is not directly possible. (paragraph styles are fine). The situation is even worse for MS Office for iPad.

Once iOS 11 hits the streets, I'll be serious looking at how much of an improvement the new multitasking scheme works (I make heavy use of it now) and whether or not that makes up for the lack in other areas. I doubt it since once I have set up my working set of apps, things work pretty well with the current method.

Instead of using the 12.9 Pro as a tablet (and remote desktop into my iMac for macOS tasks), I'm thinking of going back to my 11" MBA + iPad combo as a mobile solution. Whether or not I go with the 10.5 Pro or 2017 9.7 will depend upon a few things. Nothing definite but this is the general direction I'm leaning towards.

I actually considered purchasing the 2017 9.7 iPad when it released back in March. And then of course there was all the speculation of when we would see the iPad Pro update between March through June. Ultimately, I waited and I'm glad I did. The hardware is, nice, But it's not overly compelling. However, iOS 11 will be the primary reason for me. Both the 10.5 and 12.9 iPad are on my list. The lack of laminated display ultimately made decision for me against the 9.7 iPad.
