Hi!

Now that Mojave is coming up, I do want to know if it is wise to buy a Sapphire Radeon RX 580 Puls 8G? I got a cMP 5.1 and I do a lot of 3D medical treatmentplanning. I do got a MSI 1060 3G card today and am quite happy actually, but with Mojave coming up, should I buy a Sapphire Radeon RX 580 Puls 8G? Or...should I go for something else?

You guys, who have been "lurking" around in Mojave: Can we see Recovery mode? Is there any screen/status/process bar during upgrade, or are we still "forced to use" Mac edition cards?

Best regards

I’d sell the 1060 and get a Pulse. It’s a lot easier to live with in a cMP.
And yes, you do get recovery screens with an RX 580.

TBH, only non flashed Maxwell / Pascal GPU (which means, including your 1060) cannot see the screen during upgrade.

All other supported GPU (including RX580) can see the whole upgrade process, or using recovery partition. "Mac Edition" card really not doing much nowadays. Few months ago, it's still a requirement for firmware update. And now, we don't even need Mac EFI to update the cMP's firmware.

If you don't need CUDA, and don't quite care about the GPU's energy efficiency. Then 1060 is quite a bad choice for cMP, especially if you want a card that can use recovery partition, or display the OS update progress.

And since you picked a 1060, I assume don't need any GPU that more powerful than the RX580 (they both roughly at the same performance level).

If I were you, and budget is not an issue. I will definitely go for the RX580 on cMP. There is no reason to force yourself to deal with all those trouble if you don't even need a Pascal GPU at the very beginning.

Thank you for that. Nice!! I start look into a new card. My old MSI 1060 is a old donation for one of my kids computer.

You get the recovery screens without any modification to the firmware? When I search for this I find that you don't get the recovery screens. :S

Or is there a difference due to it being the "Pulse" card?

Recovery screens ≠ Boot screens, in case that's what you were thinking. Recovery screens means you can hold down ⌘R when you hear the boot chime, suffer through a long black screen, and eventually see a picture once the recovery partition has loaded. For the record, any video card with drivers built into macOS should get you that, not just the Pulse.

No difference, any OOTB card can access recovery partition.
