I've never really looked at the apple tv but recently I've been considering it. Firstly I'm not exactly sure what then hype is about I know they allow you to hire and buy movies via the device and you can stream via your iTunes library but is ther anything else thats really cool?

I currently have an old toshiba laptop running on windows 7 as my media hub it accesses my other windows 7 desktop which has all my movies/music however it occasionally glitches and I can't watch some movies cause it runs so poorly on my 32" LCD TV.

While my movies aren't in iTunes I could go about converting them, I have been recommended a boxee but they're about $250 opposed to the $99 of the apple tv.

Any suggestions?
Also I don't own and iMac I have a macbook pro but I don't store me movies on it, I also have a new iPad so AirPlay is said to be good aswell?

I'd probably save for a new tv before I do anything if I were you, but that aside you should be fine with Apple TV. You'll find that without a jailbreak you will rarely make use of AirPlay unless you take lots of pics or video. However, if you run your videos through handbrake and add them to iTunes on your main desktop you can stream them right to the apple tv pretty flawlessly.

Why do you think I need a new TV? It works I don't mind the size.

I was just contemplating the Apple TV whether it will work with my setup and work properly.
