Should I buy an Intel iMac??

I really want to buy a 17" Intel iMac for school this fall, but don't want to buy something that will be outdated within the month. As a student I can get about $100 off and a free Nano until Sept. 16th. Should I wait until something new is introduced or should I buy it now anyway and hope that nothing big will be introduced right away making mine worthles The only computer I'll have until I buy a new one is about 7 years old and has 10GB of hard drive, so I want to get something soon. I'm also a little worried about making the switch from PC to Mac. Is it a big change? Would I have to spend a lot of extra money buying software? Any advise is greatly appreciated

Seems like you will get alot of use from a new computer. So I will do it. Also i will get a printer since it is free after rebate. Get the HP with the built in scanner. It will not be outdated in a month...

I'd be using it mostly for essays and research, but I also enjoy games (if I have any time) and I am very interested in the garage band program. I'd also use it for watching movies and listening to music.

If they aren't highly intensive games then that machine should be fine for you

It will probably be outdated in a month, but thats computers for you, whatever you buy something new will come out, if you aren't doing ne thing intensive buy it now and get the free ipod.

The 17" Intel iMac is a great machine. You won't need the latest and greatest piece of hardware if you're a student. Besides, I think having a free printer and a free iPod Nano is an awesome deal. Unless you're really keen on having the biggest and baddest piece of hardware available on the market, I think the 17" Intel iMac will suit you fine, plus you get the iPod nano and printer, which is a plus.

But ultimately, it's up to you, and it never hurts to wait and see (unless you want the freebies).

Does thsi work with Refurbed computers as well? I will be buy a refurb iMac in a few weeks, and even though I don't need a new printer I'll take one for free

For what she is using it for sounds like a good machine to me and I think you could buy it now with no worries

i think if you are in no hurry, you might as well wait a bit more. but for me, i like to buy systems when i need them. i would rather enjoy my system for the period before newer ones come out than wait (oh, the impatience!). no matter what happens, your iMac isn't going to be outdated for a couple of years. it might not have conroe (64bit) in it but i don't think you necessarily need it. good luck!

I'd wait. The current models are quite sufficient for your needs for now, but if you plan to keep it a while, waiting a few weeks could give you another year of usability down the road.
