All iPads Should I Buy An iPad?

Hi, I used to own an iPad mini 1 Back when it came out, but I haven't had an iPad since.

I am curious too see peoples responses to my next question.

Should I buy an iPad Pro ? I use a 15" MacBook on the daily along with an iPhone X so im not sure if I should or not. id probably use it for watching tv shows and video around the house with the occasional trip out of state, or maybe the coffee shop.

Bad time to buy an iPad Pro. Major update is less than 8 months away.

The pro may be updated later this year, sure. If it is 8 months away, then now is a good time to buy one. If an update was going to be released in the next couple months, I'd say no.

If you constantly wait for the next iteration, you'll never have it. You'll always be waiting.

With iPhone, but iPad is my main computer. Granted I don’t do anything overly taxing on it.

Possibly no and possibly yes. How much use did you really get out of your ipad mini?

It's really going to come down to why you want one. I still have my ipad 4 retina from about 6 years ago. I would still be using my ipad 4 if not for a couple features on the ipad pro 12.9.

My reasoning for upgrading after 6 years with the ipad 4:
(1) My primary reason: Digital drawing with a precision stylus (i.e. apple pencil) -- saves paper, saves pencil lead. The art app procreate allows me to keep a time lapse recording of my artwork. My ipad 4 is not compatible with the apple pencil. Procreate is available for the ipad 4 but the apple pencil is not compatible with the 4.
(2) Secondary reason: split screen multitask.
(3) 512 GB of storage space - bonus reason. 512 GB is still too small. My next upgrade will only come when they increase the storage capacity over 1 tb.
(4) Larger screen size - bonus reason. And having used the 12.9 for a good period of time, I can never go back to a smaller screen size. The ipad 4 is collecting dust and will be donated to my nephew.

If not for reason 1 and 2, I would still be using my ipad 4.

And no, the ipad is not my primary device. It will never be my primary device because my Windows computer does more. There's stuff that I want to do that I can't do on my ipad.

For your use case OP, I won’t suggest spending for an iPad Pro. Just get the iPad 2017 and you’ll be more than happy with it.

In fact if you’re asking that question then pro is definitely overkill for you.

The day I got my first iPad was the day my poor laptop saw little use. For Internet consumption, for me, the iPad is hard to beat. But, in no way could the iPad replace one of my computers. I love my iPhone X but it is a poor replacement for cruising the Internet for me. It does great in a pinch when out and is a great device.

1. if you don't need one right away, wait. A new iPad should be out in a few months. The A11X should be a beast (and the A10X is no slouch).
2. If you feel you do need one right away, check your local store return policy. If there is any (eg. 30 days), use that to your advantage to see if an iPad even fits your current needs.
3. If there is a return policy available, get the lowest tier 2017 iPad, to lower your initial trial cost. See if having an iPad fits your needs.
4. If the answer is yes and you're happy with the 2017 iPad, keep it. If the answer is yes but you feel you need more storage/want longevity, return the 2017 iPad and get the 10.5 Pro. If the answer is no, then simply return the 2017 iPad.

Hm, based on what speculation? I don’t believe there is a yearly update anymore as there is with the iPhone, but it really comes down to what Apple wants at the time. The 12.9 IPad Pro for example took more than a year before the first update.

I use my iPad Pro on a daily basis and it's not my main computer. It has, however, completely replaced my 2012 MacBook Pro. My iPhone (still using a 5S) is pretty much just used as a phone, mainly because of how slow it is and the small screen, but that wouldn't really change even if I had an iPhone X since the large iPad screen still makes for a better experience for general internet usage. My PC is used for gaming and other things I need a "real computer" for. My iPad is used for everything else and it's by far the device I use the most. It's also my "laptop" when I travel. In other words, I can definitely see how an iPad can be useful even if you already own a really good MacBook Pro and iPhone.

BTW I have absolutely no real need for an iPad Pro over the regular iPad. I got it because of the better screen, smoother scrolling, and so I could use Apple's Smart Keyboard (which I much prefer over the 3rd party offerings available for the regular iPad). I have no regrets spending the extra money just so I could have a slightly better experience when using the device. It's worth it to me.

I’ve just bought the 9.7 iPad and love it. It’s fast, smooth and personally I haven’t noticed the unlaminated display. It’s better than the display on my old iPad mini 1 and Lenovo Tab 3 8. It’s an upgrade from those two devices.

The fact that you felt you should ask strangers if you should purchase a want and not a need, should be a red flag to hold off, assess your real need and potential use to income ratio, and then possibly test some units in person.

8 months is a long time. Wouldn't that make it a perfect time to buy unless you absolutely HAVE TO be the first one on your street with the newest toy?
