Hello there

I am going to purchase the QUAD G5 and 23inch Monitor

I found a nice deal in the US but reside in France

My question is of course this G5 will be configured to be plugged on US current

does the QUAD G5 offer a voltage switch (210-110) on the back of the machine

I want to avoid using transformers on both the G5 and 23inch monitor

THX for your help

My Rev A G5 is from the US – it has an automatic voltage switcher so all I needed to do was swap the plug cable and it all worked fine. I'm not sure if this is the case with the newer Quad models, though.

A couple of words of warning – the warranty for a Mac desktop will normally only cover the machine in the country it was bought – so if you have any technical problems you may find you're not covered. Also be wary of taxes – depending where in the States your G5 is there may be extra Sales Tax to pay that'll bump the price up, and also check if there are any custom charges for bringing the machine into France.

You don't need a transformer. From the US Apple Store G5 Specs page:

Yes, make sure that the warranty applies when you bring it out of the US. You don't want something that expensive to not be covered by warranty.

I think Apple has a worldwide warranty for portables only, but I'm not sure.

Check the potential shipping charges beforehand too.

If you're planning on bringing it back yourself, be prepared for excess baggage charges.

If you're having it shipped, then ask how much it's likely to be and be aware that you're far more likely to have to pay on the customs charges that way.

Just another 'be careful' note.
You would not have ANY (local) warranty on a G5, iMac or dispay if you buy it in US and bring it to France.
It could turn very nasty very quick.
At least now you have the information to make an informed decision :). GL.

Before you take it back to France consider two things;
1) French Sales Tax is 20.6%
2) Do you really want to live in France with all those French people?:p

Oh, they're so nice compared to Americans :p

Apple's warranty applies worldwide to portables, iPods, and accessories, as well as the Mac mini.

The iMacs as well as the PowerMacs are only covered in the country that they are puchased in.
