The technology store on campus has a couple of new in-the-box MBP 17" 2.3 GHz. I am planning to buy a MBP (15" 2.4 GHz) but saw the 17" at the same price. I don't think I really need the 2.4 GHz power and I think the bigger screen would be nice.

This forum has a lot of great insights; What do you think?

Since it's not Santa Rosa, it probably has the CPU whine. I would never want a 17" laptop, but that's just me.

I have a MacBook with an C2D processor and there is no whine, and yes I do know what it sounds like I have heard it on other machines. But they have all been CD machines.

Buy it. In the unlikely event that you have a problem, I assume you'll be able to return it with no trouble to your technology store. Maybe ask them what their policy is.

in a very brightly lit store, i compared a matte 15" with a glossy 17" side by side with both at full brightness setting. the 17" was at standard res, not 2k.

the 15" screen looks evenly lighted while the 17" just appeared patchy in terms of brightness. the 15" was much brighter too.

i really wanted to like the 17" for the amount of desktop space in osx, especially with the 2k res, but the 15" just looks better.

See, I don't believe this. I had four (I had three, but one had a logic board change) C2D MacBooks, all of them had the whine.

It's in the top left corner, most obvious when the power is connected. If you put your ear to the top left corner of the keyboard and turn off one of the CPU cores, is there no difference? Yes, put your ear against the computer. I don't trust your hearing. ;)

Lol...but do you think that if you have to try that hard to hear it that it makes a difference. I've had my C2D mbp for 9 months now and haven't noticed the whine until just now when I put my ear to the computer(even though it might only be the fan). Even in quiet rooms, i haven't heard a thing.

Well my Core Duo MBP doesn't even make a whisper of noise. The hard drive does its thing but thats it. And btw! Go for that 17inch one over the new santa rosa one. Bigger screen rocks! :D
