Should I buy TF2? Will it work on my MBP?

Hi

I have a base model 13" MacBook Pro which I bought in Sept 2009. TF2 is available for $9.99 right now for Halloween and I am thinking of buying it.

1. I am concerned about performance. How will it run on my MBP? I only have 2 GB RAM, a 2.26 Ghz C2D and 9400M.

2. Is the game still actively played and not deserted like some older online games?

3. Are the other players mostly addicted nutjobs with no life who will finish you before you can know whats going on? Or as a beginner will I have a chance to play the game properly while enjoying it?

4. Is the game a good one for someone who just wants to play it casually once in a while?

I have the newer Macbook, 320m, 2.4, 4 gigs of ram and let me tell you, it runs like crap. I can't get a stable framerate at all no matter what my settings are, it's definitely playable but not fantastic. It hovers around 40-60 with nobody around but drops to 20 when the actions gets heavy.

It'll run on the 9400m but it won't be great. Since you're only going to be playing casually then it probably won't be too big of a problem and even if it is, you'll only be out 10 bucks, not bad. If you ever upgrade to a new computer, Team Fortress 2 will still be there waiting.

The community's pretty decent, they're pretty friendly and if you tell them you're new, they'll teach you the ropes for most part unlike Counter Strike Source.

There are nutjobs with pretty much any online game but you shouldn't let a few bad apples ruin your experience.

I suggest Left 4 Dead instead, it runs much better, same price and really gets you in the mood for Halloween.
 
But I read that TF2 even runs slowly in battles on good PC's, is that true? It seems a bit weird that all Source games run pretty well except TF2.
 
It runs fine on my friend's pc, his is pretty outdated now. It's a 3 year old game, it runs fine on Windows. Mac OS, however.. <_<

Yeah it works, no need to change the settings. That config does everything for you. It doesn't look all that great, but at least it's playable. I know a lot of pro players use the same config since graphics don't really matter.
 
It looks like **** and it runs like **** on a 13 MBP. Save your money. For some reason even Left 4 Dead 2 runs better. TF2 is pretty much ruined anyway, there are too many useless items.

I don't think it is ruined, in fact, I love it even more with all these updates. I am not one to collect the items, but I love the fact that the TF2 Dev team continually put work into the game to make it better. I love the new map and stuff they created for Halloween, I love the sense of humor they put into their work. TF2 is the perfect game for me.

Anyway, I played tf2 via crossover games (emulator of sorts) when it was only out for Windows on my 15" 2009 2.4ghz MBP. It played very well, I actually had higher scores back then on the MBP than I do now on the Mac Pro. ;-p

For $10 (if the sale is still on), I would still buy it and try it. $10 is a steal for such a great game, it is constantly updated, and LOADS of fun. You don't have much to lose in my opinion. Your specs are on the low side, but it may still be playable.

According to the user computer spec survey Valve did, of the Mac players:
46% of Mac players had MBP
37% of them play with 2GB ram
23% play with a processor speed of 2ghz to 2.3ghz

You read total bull. (sortof)

I can run TF2 on an x1600, medium settings, modded/overclocked drivers at my native res of 1440*900 and get between 30-60fps. Using Windows XP. I've thrown around 600 hours into the game at those settings; beautifully addictive game.

What can make TF2 run slowly are network issues. Since I've had a good internet connection (ping of 5 to my fave servers) I don't get that performance drop anymore.

I hope you grabbed it for 10 bucks. That is a steal!!My favorite game of all, and has been for years. So addictive, you won't be able to get enough. :D

I was talking to someone else in another thread about the performance on our 2010 mbp. Not thrilled w/ it at all. Does look decent, moves okay, but not great. If you play it on pc, and then try it on your mbp, you will most certainly not be pleased.

It just does not have the same feel as you are used to on pc. Not fluid at all.

However, I feel strongly that we will eventually have some drivers come our way that may smooth it out a bit.

We have to be siked that we even have it as an option for osx! It will get better with time!
 
On my macbook Pro I get average 40fps sometimes 60's and around alotof the other teams players it can dip to 28 for a second but its 100percent playable
 
im actually thinking about gettin tf2 because my mbp runs l4d2, css, and garrys mod(with no addons:confused:) all those games run fine on my mbp so i would assume that tf2 would be fine
