Should I get a External Bluray?

I have a system with some faulty ports, so I only have 2 SATA ports. Long story short I bought a new HDD for media and had to unplug my internal DVDRW drive.

I really don't use it much anymore as everything is digital. The major thing I was going to do was rent some of the movies I have blurays of in DVD and rip those.

Now I'm thinking why not just get an external Bluray and get HD rips. Thoughts. Is it worth it really or should I just get a external DVD for $30.

I'd probably just shop around and get a blu ray drive when it's on sale. I've seen external blu ray readers (not burners) for about $100 at a physical store.

I'm not so sure I'd pay extra to get a blu ray burner. I hardly ever burn CDs or DVDs, so I can't imagine burning a lot of blu rays either.

Just trying to decide if paying the extra $70 is worth it for a external BR Drive. I won't use it for playing movies. Only thing I'll use it for is to rip the 30 BR Movies I have. Is BR ripping quite a bit more painful than DVD. I use MakeMKV and Handbrake now for DVD's.

I was just going to use my DVD drive and rent those BR movies in DVD and rip the DVD as the way I look at it...it doesn't matter where the rip comes from as long as I own the movie.

I am buying all my movies off iTunes in HD now which is maybe going to be 5-10 movies per year.

The only thing harder about ripping BR's is the time and of course, the time it takes depends on what sort of horsepower you have to do it with. Mine typically take 9-11 hours on my very ancient MBP.

In all honesty, I find most of the stuff I tend to watch is fine from DVD. Upscaling works great and the only thing I do BR's for is that big blockbuster action, sci-fi, or scenic flick. You know...something where the detail and better audio really stands out. I just don't see the need in the expense, drive space and encode time for...well...Bridesmaids.

The HD downloads from iTunes is really good, but I rent, not buy and for just a handful a year, is probably a good way to go.
