I have the worst time making decisions with technology. My upgrade period is finally here. I currently have a 16gb iphone 3g. I now want a iphone 3gs white 16 or 32gb. I load my iphone with movies and tv show and do want but dont need the extra space. I want the video camera especially for posting music clips when im in the studio creating and working with artists. on top of that apple just replaced my 3g with a brand new one under warranty because that iphone was losing wifi and 3g signals. I really want the 3gs but cant justify spending the cash right now.

Should i just wait for the next generation iphone ?

Why not just get an iPod Nano with the video camera, then wait for the new phone? That said, I love my 3gs...

It depends, are you on a 1 year or two year cycle? If you are on a 1 year upgrade cycle like I am, why not upgrade now? The next iPhone will come out in June and you will only need to wait 4 months until you can upgrade again. Plus you can probably sell your 3GS for some good scratch.

if you already have 3g, then might as well just wait for the next iphone version. which is what i'm doing.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

I'm in pretty much the same situation and have decided to wait to see what Apple does this summer. They may release a new iPhone and they may only do minor updates. Either way, this insures that you won't have outdated technology 8 months after a purchase.

My upgrade cycle is always oct 23 I believe. sucks really

if you are anything like me there is NO way youre gonna make it till june.. you might as well go ahead and get one... if you try and wait, by january youre gonna be going so crazy that you will do it then and throw your upgrade schedule off that much more.

new iphone user

Ive been reading and its all fine and dandy to upgrade if your a current iphone participate.

But as i am not, and have always been rather shady of this deal with the iphone because ive been waiting for an android machine on att for years now and well practically tired of waiting.

Truly i just want an iphone to seamlessly always be connected to gmail and google talk so chat with my far away women friend. Do i really need the 3gs for the video capturing and what little it really has over the 3g, or is the 3g just plenty enough to keep until a new iphone 3gs 2 or whatever comes out?

I've had my 3GS 32Gb for about 1 month, only reason I got it was because I lost my 3G 16Gb ( I was gutted ) I've had 5 iPhones now 2x2G, 2x3G & 1x3GS, I would say if it's going to cost a fair amount of money then wait, unless you can recoup a good % by selling the 3G. As much as I like the 3GS, now that I've had it a little while it's not enough of a upgrade/improvement to justify the outlay. Especially as you say you dont really need it apart from a handy video recorder, which you could get for free from a jailbreak.

Thank you,

well i succumbed to the pressures of the apple powerhouse and got a 3g. not the 3gs i see no reason for me to conspire with such monstrous creatures when a large beast shall soon appear. Truly the ability to now seamlessly be connected to google and my ical make all that much more of a happy camper.

thanks again and here to to the iphone.

The wait will soon be over for those who have a bit more patience, AT&T will likely have the Android powered HTC Hero in 2010.

Dell's Android phone will also be via AT&T

u really like ya imacs dude. I was just looking at ya sig lol..

I'd get one now , the next one will not be out for ages, probably june, thats about 8 months wait.

still deliberating. really it's the money issue really. if they had ichat on the iphone3gs i would really jump for that.

Wait,

How does one get onto the 1 year upgrade cycle?!

Your phone charges before taxes & fees has to be over $100 a month. So your voice, data, texting, & any other service that can be added. If you are on a family plan, it will be whatever phone has the main charges if they are over $100 a month.

I make money every time I upgrade. I get the latest and greatest iPhone for around $200 (early upgrade), then sell the old one for $300-$350. The same deal with my wife's iPhone. We paid a lot for the original iPhone, but I think we've made all that $$ back and more by upgrading and selling the old phones on eBay.

That makes no sense. You can only upgrade on October 23rd?

Why not just upgrade next June/July if and/or when the new iPhone comes out? Wouldn't your upgrade cycle then be fixed to whatever date that is?

Get a 16GB 3GS. Wait for the 4-th gen to be released, then sell your 3GS on eBay and use the cash to cover up your expenses.

If I were you, I would wait. It's almost november, and otherwise you are stuck 2 years to the 3Gs. The 3Gs is much better but keep in mind the next generation may support LTE and some awesome new features. The 3Gs is relatively small update if you already had a 3G, but the 4th. generation definetly will give the special "wow"-feeling. Apple was able to afford a small update, but in 2010 they have to come up with something bigger (for the 'old school 3G users'). Probably they also have to come up with something bigger in 2011 because 3Gs is pretty similar to the 3G - even though it works much better - and 'rivals' (Sony Ericsson, HTC, Nokia, Palm) will catch up: in fact, they are already trying to do that.

Further if you now upgrade you will have the same question every year, but if you upgrade next June than you can say in 2011 or 2012 "I will upgrade this year again" without to think about "Hm, but it's already november*... maybe I should wait..."

So the conclusion:

do not upgrade because of the following reasons:
1) You will have the same question every year because you are almost in 'the middle' of every iPhone upgrade
2) The 3Gs works much better, but it isn't a revolution: I'm sure the iPhone 2010 will have some awesome features (because 2 small upgrades after each other... don't expect that)
3) Holiday Season: probably you need to pre-order your iPhone

do upgrade because:
1) The extra speed, voice control, compass etc.
- Compass: more and more apps will use it for augmented reality, I really think the compass will play a important role in the feature
- Speed: it will amaze you, the iPhone 3G will be an old grandfather.
2) The iPhone 2011 will have some awesome features: 'rivals' will catch up in both 2010 and 2011 so Apple has to do something special, otherwise they will lose customers. If you buy one now, you can upgrade to the iPhone 2011 without extra cost.
3) AT&T may lose it's exclusive deal, but if not, this definetly will happen in 2011: if you upgrade now, than you can upgrade to the iPhone 5th. gen in 2011 and finally use another carrier... without worry-ing about unlocking or jailbreaking.

The best thing you can do is make a list for your self, the cons and the pros. Look at what fits you best.

* Yeah, I know it's october but against the time you've decided to upgrade it will be november :p
