I might buy an MBP 13 for college, and I know that Apple has the free iPod (up to $200) with the purchase of a Mac promotion going on now.

If I do take advantage of this promotion, I won't get the 8GB iPod Touch because I already have a 2nd gen 16GB iPod Touch, so the 8GB would basically be downgrading, in my opinion. I really like the Classic, but I don't have that many songs (over 700 at the moment, but I've been planning on downloading a bunch of new songs and putting on a bunch of songs from a huge stack of my dad's CDs). Would the Classic be pointless then?

I was also thinking that maybe I shouldn't even get a new iPod since my current one isn't too old (like a year and a half, probably) and still works well. Should I even get the free iPod?

Get the best iPod you can for the deal and sell it if you don't need it. Think of the sales proceeds as a rebate on the computer.

Get an iPod classic. You may not have a lot if music content right now but that may be not the case later on. The classic has a huge capacity to feed it your tunes.

Hey, if I was getting a free iPod under $200 with a purchase of a Apple laptop, I would be sure to get it. Since you already have an iPod Touch 16GB and it's not too old, I suggest getting a 8GB Touch and sell it sealed on eBay or craigslist, you could probably get $150-$160 cash for it and possibly save up for one of the new iPod's that are scheduled to come out in September.

As long as your not running out of space you should probably get a Touch and then sell it for whatever. And if you want to you could get a 4G from selling the 16GB and 8GB, you should get over enough.
