I upgraded from my XS to a 13 PM through my carrier who offers device protection through my plan. Is it worth purchasing AppleCare or am I just spending more money for no reason? These are the details of the carrier offered protection:
  • Loss, theft, unrecoverable, and damage
  • Drops, spills, cracked screens
  • Malfunction after manufacturer warranty expires
  • As soon as next day replacement

It sounds like great coverage features, but what's the track record of actually getting claims honored with that carrier's insurer versus the Applecare+ coverage?

Great question, have only had to use it one time before. Dropped my XS in the sink and it slowly died within 20 minutes. I took it into a carrier office and they activated an old 7 that I had to use temporarily and submitted a claim for the XS. I had to pay ~$170 (was in March of 2020 so I don’t remember exactly) and got a refurbished XS through the mail a couple weeks later. I’m just wondering if AppleCare+ would provide any additional benefits.

Long as your coverage works. Apple was preferred in past because they’d swap it out and wouldn’t deal with carrier. Honestly it’s been years since I’ve used it. If apple give temp phones now or whatever I’m kind of clueless. My store is an hour away as well so there’s that.

I’m also a few hours away from an Apple store. I’ve only purchased AppleCare for the devices I purchased outright (IPad Pro, Watch series 5). I’m not entirely sure how that would mesh with my carrier who I’m doing installment pricing through.

It’s worth it if you need to use it. Not worth it if you don’t.
Insurance is always a gamble. There’s no way to know if it’s worthwhile.
I’ve never needed to use car insurance in 30 years but I was forced to buy it every year. That’s a lot of money thrown away.
Some other people crash their car the first year they own it - so there’s just no way to say.

Some people are clutzes and drop iPhones, breaking the glass, others have never had an issue in 10 years.

Get Apple Care insurance if you feel unlucky or you know you drop things.

Why would you buy insurance for something you are already insured for?
Study the T&Cs of your current cover and make sure you are happy with it.
(as you know) Apple care is not perfect either. It is expensive and require the payment of a not insignificant excess in case of a claim.

So I bought an iPad Pro 11" in 2018. Applecare is set to expire January 22, 2022. Two weeks ago, I dropped it. First time ever. and I dropped it while it was out of the case. It hit the marble floor, on its corner, denting the corner, and cracking the screen, even with a glass protector on it. It cost me 48€ to get a replacement unit in a week, since they dont replace the screen. Just like @now i see it said, its worth it if you need to use it, not worth it if you dont. In my case, it was worth it.

Also, even though the Applecare was set to expire in January of next year, since it was replaced, I can add Applecare to the new unit also, which I did. Can anyone confirm that that is allowed? I figured it is, since it automatically allowed me to add it, without any red flags popping up.
