Ok, so i'm in the market for a computer. I was looking at a MacMini. I would be using the computer for schoolwork (essays and such), the internet, AIM, and a couple of games. Do you think this is the right computer for me?? And if so, how much memory, ram, and all that stuff do you think i should get??
 
What games would you plan on playing on the Mini? It only has 32MB of VRAM, so it is very crippled when it comes to gaming. Otherwise, the Mac Mini sounds perfect for your needs.

But - I'd also recommend to wait until next Tuesday to see if Apple releases an Intel Mac Mini.
 
For School Work internet and AIM the Mac Mini is perfect!!

What kind of Games? Mac Mini is not a real gaming computer but it can handle flash/Java games just fine.

RAM-get 1GB
HardDrive-if you need the 100 GB now go for it, but if you don't need it yet stay with 80Gb.


Wireless key board and wireless mouse is nice but the i like the mighty mouse
 
I would def wait until the intel mac mini is released, otherwise you'll be kicking yourself. Its going to be much more common for game companies to start releasing pc/mac versions of games since the chip architecture will be the same. Since ppc's are now going to start taking a back seat, it will take even more time than it already does to release ppc versions of games.

also go with all the ram you can get

lol I love the fact that everyone makes the mini & iBook sounds so underpowered that newbies get confused and think it won't be able to handle the exact stuff it's designed for.

I've just seen a number of threads lately to the extent of "Is a 2ghz dual g5 fast enough or should I got for the 2.7....Oh yeah I'll be using this surfing the web and e-mail mostly, maybe some video chat"
 
yeah, im with you dorno. I could have afforded a powerbook, but I have no reason to get one - went with the iBook. I really don't use my computer for more than internet, messaging, and mostly music. I do use garageband but that's fine on my iBook. I spend most of my time with my guitar so my computer doesn't need to be the latest and newest crap.

People just don't understand that you don't need the BEST computer. You need the computer that fits your needs.
 
I'm no expert, but that sounds like it would be fast enough to me. I have an iBook with 1 GB of RAM and I have never had any problems with it doing all the basic things I need it to do. It sounds like you're just using it for basic things. I was running probably 6 different programs and had about 15 windows open earlier and there was absolutely no hindrance on it's speed or performance. I have been very impressed with how "zippy" it is compared to my older desktop. So unless you're doing more than what you stated, that computer should be quite enough.

The people who need more speed are those doing far more heavy duty things like video editing and such.

It may run but its probably more like Doom 3: Interactive Slideshow
