Should I get my iPhone replaced?

Alright well ever since I got my iPhone last Friday, I have been wondering if my battery performance was sub-par or not. I wasn't able to accurately tell how long my battery was lasting because of crashes, etc., resetting the timer.

Until Today....

Seeing that I only got 3 hours and 27 minutes of usage until the 20% alert, I am thinking there is something wrong with the battery. This usage consists of about 1 hour of texting/web browsing on wifi, 1 and a half hours on 3G talk, and about 1 hour on 3G browsing.

I have push off, fetch at manual, brightness at about 20%, 3G on the whole time, and about 3/4 of the time with wifi enabled, 1/4 disabled for the 1 hour of 3G browsing.

I am concerned because I was able to burn through 20% of the battery (from 40% to 20% warning) in half an hour of 3G browsing. This is obviously not right.

Something else I happened to notice was that as soon as I started using the phone whether it be calling or browsing, the back of the phone (center of phone, halfway between Apple logo and the iPhone label) would instantly start to warm up. It didn't get hot to the touch, but i'm guessing about 85 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit temperature. I am pretty sure this is where the battery is located on the phone, and I know a hot battery probably means that it's defective.

Any tips would be helpful, otherwise I'm going to contact Apple and see what they say to do.

I'm of course in the same boat. The max I've gotten in usage was 3hr 35min and that was with 3G, Wifi off. Standby was at 14 hours and it died completely. As I said earlier, I have not talked to a genius, but a floor guy at the Apple Store told me that 3 hours of EDGE usage for talking was perfectly normal and the new phones just eat power. Reading through this forum, I am seeing people getting a day or more of standby and 6-7 hours of usage. I could only dream of getting that kind of usage out of mine. I have to charge mine every night or I won't be able to use it the next day. In my old iPhone, I could forget to charge it, and it would be good to go the next day.

Yeah I would love to have battery life like that as well. I expect to get 6-7 hours of usage. I waited 3 weeks to get the phone, and I definitely should get what I payed for.

The only issue for me is that I don't have any Apple Stores close to me. I'm also not the main account holder of the ATT account (if that matters). My only option at this point is to send the phone into Apple to get the battery replaced. That would take 1-2 weeks and I really don't feel like doing that.

My next option is to wait until I get my license (in about a month, I'm 16), and drive to the nearest Apple store which is about an hour away, and hope that they can replace it for me. I'm not sure if I were to go to the store without my dad that they would replace the phone for me. The other downside about doing that is that I'm NOT interested in getting a refurbished phone. It's just something about the word refurbished that doesn't settle with me.

I don't think they do anything with ATT if they replace the phone. I also don't want a refurbished one, but right now I doubt they are giving them out. I paid for a new one, and I expect to get a new one. If they want to give me a discount, then I'll accept a reburbished one.

Anyway, they'll just send you a replacement if you call them on the phone. You'll have to wait a day or two for it to arrive after you send yours in.

Let me know what they say on the phone if you call, and I may go to the store tomorrow and see if they'll replace it or at least tell me why my meter is jumping all around despite me doing everything I was supposed to do to calibrate it.

I will probably end up just getting the replacement then. When I think about it, as long as there is nothing wrong with the phone when I get it (ie no scratches, **** like that), then I'll be ok with it.

I definitely think I'm going to end up doing that since I really don't feel like waiting to go to the Apple store a month from now. I will update you when I talk to them tomorrow.
