i have a late 2013 MacBook Pro with Retina display....I have a bleeding screen which has got worse and now the battery needs replacing...I think I had a quote £250 for a new screen a year ago when I first rook my MacBook to an Apple store which at the time I could t afford...so if I get the screen and batter replaced I’m looking at maybe just under £500.....am I best to just go an get a new one or get it repaired as I don’t know how long macs usually last as I’ve had this one for 5 years now

I'm still on my 2012 and its going strong. Let me ask this, if you get the repairs, how many more years of using it will make the repair worthwhile?

Since £500 is a lot less then what new ones are going, the easy answer is get the repair, but what you don't state is how you use the laptop. If you use it for office apps, and what not, then I'd say go for the repair.

I use my laptop for video editing for YouTube, photoshop and illustrator and everyday stuff like emails... I don’t use editing everyday but a few times a week

Like all the colour in the screen has gone funny and you can’t see anything as the screen has been damaged and parts of it is black with coloured stripes on it, if you search on google you’ll know what I mean

What do you mean by "bleeding screen"?

Sounds like the screen is in bad shape, when I initially read your post it sounded like it was being conveyed as light bleed.

I mean, that's approaching a considerable percentage of the cost of a new notebook just for repairs. It's a tough call, but I would argue putting that money up towards something else while doing what you can with your current machine - like using it while plugged in for the time being.

There is no "typical" or "regular" lifespan of a computer. It directly reflects your care for it, and beyond that - dumb luck. In other words, a hard drive can quit tomorrow, or in 5 more years.

I have a 2010 apple notebook that still gets ~3 hours charge on its original battery. That certainly doesn't mean most batteries last 8 years.

Is the laminate pealing in the black area? If so, you might get a screen replacement for free. I just did earlier this week. No joke.

OP says the screen has colored stripes, and partly black - which is typical of a cracked screen. Obvious damage such as that to the screen would not be under any service warranty (other than AppleCare + or some other insurance program) as it would be evidence of accidental damage. A 2013 MBPro would likely be too old to be under any warranty anyway.

Try an Apple certified third party repair, it seems you are in England so there should be someone close I got quoted £120 for the battery and you can get screens fixed cheaper too maybe get it down to £300 that would be worth fixing.

Thanks everybody, I’m going to book an appoint at the Apple store and get a Apple technician to look and give me a quote again, as I remember last time they said the screen would be £250 so I’ll have to see what they say, of course if it’s going to be over £500 for the lot o will just wait and get a new one

Mine is a 2014 and they replaced last week. I was truly surprised myself. I was certain I was out of all the warranties but they still swapped it with no cost to me. Just offering options.

I would cut your loses UKP500 is probably more than it's worth and you would be really upset if you spend that and something else goes wrong

I would buy a new one just for peace of mind and think about having a spare or gifting it to a family member if it's just UKP250
