Hello,

There was a bloomberg article by Mark Gurman about the whole bunch of new macs with the M2 chip (at its derivatives e.g. M2 Pro, M2 MAx) being tested internally at Apple. He also states that some of these machines including the mac book air will be debuting in this WWDC. I was planning on putting an order for a mac studio (with M1 Max) , but now I'm not sure what to do. My preference is only for a mac studio or a mac mini, no laptops, no imacs. Should I go ahead with this purchase or wait for the m2 mac studio assuming it's not far behind the WWDC-released mac books. I suppose the question is this: since this would be my first mac ever, do you mac users base your purchasing decisions on the hardware specs or your workload/usage scenario needs?

Thanks

I highly doubt Apple would release a new version of the Mac Studio in the same year.....
More likely the remaining Mac Mini AS.
With the ongoing 'long waits' buy sooner rather than later if you need it.

Edit:
Plus internal testing can last years before release.

I have only seen ONCE, since the release, a Base Mac Studio available for pickup in a UK Apple Store, but then I am not actively looking for one. And everyone's delivery dates are constantly getting pushed back.

There won’t be another studio this year.

The new MacBook Air will have a regular M1 chip only.

13” pro will get updated with M2

Good point! I implicitly assumed that going into internal testing meant the nearing the end of the development cycle. Thanks for picking on that

By the time anyone is buying any new tech, the rumors for its replacement are already flying. Waiting for the next gen becomes a perpetual wait. The best advice is usually buy it when you want/need it and enjoy it from that day forward.

When there is a M2 Studio for sale, the M3 Studio will be rumored. When there is a M3, M4 will be rumored. Waiting on the "better" one is a forever wait. If you have uses for it now, get it now and enjoy whatever it does for you. It seems the new Studio should easily have good "legs" for at least 3+ years.

Look at the MacRumors buying guides. They give you an idea of release history. Main phones every year, iPads year+, Macs sometimes multiple years. There is no way to predict when an updated studio will release. Given that we have shipping delays now until June and they are selling all that they can produce likely into 1st quarter of 2023.

I wouldn't expect to see any new "Mac Studio" models this year.

There probably WILL be a new Mini release towards the end of the year, with internals that are a "step up" from the current m1 Mini, but "not quite up to the level" of the base model Mac Studio.
