Hi, I'm new here, and can't wait to buy my first Mac computer. I'm thinking of buying the 21.5" Mac, and can't decide whether or not I should upgrade to 8GBs of RAM.

Do you guys think it's worth it? Will I notice a big difference?

I've never regretted getting the largest screen, biggest hard drive and most memory that I can afford.

The answer is yes.

Do you also drive a Porsche and take private jets everywhere? Because those are better experiences, also, than what normal people need.

The last I checked (30 seconds ago), 4GB of RAM at OWC is $88. 8GB of RAM is $475.

Unless you are doing serious video editing or something else RAM-hogging, the 8GB of RAM is overkill. It may save you two minutes of waiting in the next 5 years you own computer.

+1...even 2gb is enough for some people:rolleyes:

i doubt you'll use more than 4 gb...if you do then you can always upgrade it yourself:cool:

Stock configuration iMac comes with 4gb installed. An additional 2x2Gb kit from OWC is $87.00 for a grand total of 8gb. Your numbers are way off.

I've never had any kind of need to upgrade to more than 4GB.
It's actually kind of a waste of money, UNLESS you're a professional or going to college to become a video/3D graphics editor, and really need all the RAM you could get.

If it that isn't the case, 4GB should be more than enough for you, sir.

I have 4gb of ram and snow leopard and with 2 safari windows, mail, iphoto, itunes, pages and numbers all running I have 2.12 gb of ram free.

I have 8 installed and it's kinda like money ... The more u have, the more u end up spending... I now catch myself never closing programs and I also run parallels and allocate 3gbs to windows 7 alone
plus I already had the extra ram from my mini I sold... I bought that ram from newegg for $62.49 (crucial) I recommend Everyone should check newegg daily for the good deals

Are you comparing 4GB vs 8GB to a Ford vs Porsche?

There's 4 ram slots and it comes with 2x2MB. OWC sells 2x2MB for $88 so I'd just throw in 2 more sticks for $88 to make it 4x2MB. Unless you were thinking 2x4MB to make the 8MB of ram which would be silly, since ram is known to drop (plunge rather) in price.

Whoah. 8MB of RAM? Have I returned to 1994?

No way would you want to spend $475 to upgrade your RAM.

4GB is plenty, unless you're some uber multi-power user

Yes. Get 4 now and upgrade next year. By then, 4gb sticks will be about 1/2 as much and you'll 12gb for the cost of today's 8gb.

5.5gb was ample for me, I only upgraded to 9gb to have a ram disk large enough to hold some HD video.

$87 to upgrade to 8GB on a new iMac. Not $475. And you would be surprised how easy it is to use up RAM on these machines. I have 3gb currently on my imac and with multiple Safari windows, Itunes and my RAW editor, I frequently use most of it up.
