What's the deal with the Apple Refurbished store? Are those items in good working condition? They have a Quad up for sale.

Dunno if I should go with the refurbished Quad or new 2.3?

Apple refurbs are generally in perfect condition.

This is especially true with late model returns.

They are also covered under the full factory warranty, so this is by far
better than buying used out on the street.

If you are not eligable for the education discounts, this is one of the best ways to get a deal.

My daughter's refurb 1.33 GHz ibook arrived in perfect condition, not a scratch and her's had a HD upgrade at no charge.

There's a good chance a refurb Quad may already have 1-2 GB RAM installed or a possible HD or videocard upgrade, what ever the original order had installed.

You can also get full Apple Care before the warranty expires, so there is very little risk.

If for any reason something is wrong, they'll either fix it or send you another one.

You can find new and used G5's on ebay for much less then apple.com directly (MUCH CHEAPER.) http://www.ebay.com

As I suggested earlier, if you're in business or can make money from this machine, a G5 is a good option (it's available now AND it's well supported).

HOWEVER since it is soon going to be end of line, I would be looking at a refurb or as heavily discounted as I could find. Apple's store wouldn't necessarily be my first place of call.

you will regret it

granted some apps are not yet universal. But the next gen of powermacs are likely to blow the socks off of the g5s by 4-5x. I know the imac was only 2x faster, but if the quad core intels make it into powermacs, its on, to say the least. wait til this summer to get a powermac.

What do you think about the dual 2.3? Do you think that will hold up?

The 2.3 is faster than my DP 2.0 and it seems the newer 2.3 dual cores are considerably less prone to problems.

While the 2.3 is not as droolworthy as the Quad, it's a solid workhorse.

These newer dual cores are also PCI-Express which is a major improvement.

The one you choose really depends on how much work you are trying to churn out to meet those deadlines.

The applications you own now are optimized for PPC architecture.
Some will be ready as Universal Binary by the time the new Intel Towers debut, some won't.

It's sounds like you need to get rolling now, so waiting for an Intel Tower till August or later with back orders and shipping delays makes this a rough decision.
Once the new Intel Towers debut, you can expect a $300-$600 price drop on the clearance PPC
models.

If you can't wait,
It may be more desirable to get the 2.3, load it up with 4 GB 3rd party RAM
and get yourself a sweet display and get back to work right away.

Coming up from a G4 this system will scream.

I have a PM 2.0 x 2 and a PM 2.5 quad. I love both of them and would not hesitate to buy another. I will buy another PM before year's end. I will decide at that time whether I buy a new Intel Quad, or maybe a good deal on a PPC Quad. These machines are great.
