Should I Jailbreak my 3GS?

Hello guys, I am new to jailbreaking and I am deciding if I should jailbreak my 3GS or not. Here are some questions that I have.

1) What are the benefits of jailbreaking 3GS? (Now that it comes with MMS, Video Recording)
2) For those of you who jailbreak their 3GS, Why did you jailbreak yours and what apps do you have that you can't get from Itune App Store?
3) Will I still be able to access Itune App Store after jailbreaking and using cydia?

I'm going to skirt your questions and fill you in on my experience.

I JB with Purplera1n and everything was grand until last night. I tried emailing a picture and it said "saving photo" with a spinner for about five minutes before I finally force quit mail. After that, no matter how many times I resprung or restarted my camera and photos apps wouldn't open but crashed on startup. I also started to get some major slowdowns. I restored from backup and it ended up taking almost two hours which is something I've never experienced before.

Now to the questions:

1. SBSettings is amazing. It's the one thing that always draws me back. I also really enjoy iRealQuickSMS.

2. See #1

3. Yes.
 
There is no downside to jailbreaking as you can always to back to stock firmware if it's not for you. Your 3GS will do everything it does now after your jailbreak and you just have options for more (non-Apple) applications.

Many of my Cydia apps are tweeks:

SBSettings: Allows me to toggle of and on things that you would have to go two and three levels deep in the menu system to change (3G on off, Bluetooth, auto correction, etc). Also allows me to free up memory and cancel running processes when not needed to free up more memory (Safari is a memory hog).

PdaNet: Allows me to tether my iPhone and use it as a modem via wifi or USB.

3G Unrestrictor: Let's me use apps via 3G that ATT has blocked, specifically Slingplayer for me.

Five Icon Dock: Let's me put one more icon in the bottom row to get to easily.

Weather Icon: Puts the actual temp on the Weather Icon and updates with changes. Also puts the temp (optional) on the top next to your battery readout so you can always see it.

Wiggle Free: Stops that silly wiggling of icons when you are trying to move them around...I hated that!

That's pretty much all I use, while others like to "theme" and personalize their iPhones quite a bit.

Winterboard and SBsettings. Themes and a control panelish thing.

Same as above, I can't live w/o themes. I also have the NES emulator, OSU, and terminal.

3) Will I still be able to access Itune App Store after jailbreaking and using cydia?

Yes.
 
1 - Ability to customize basically anything and everything was the biggest draw for me (Im also a new iPhone user with a 3GS), but I haven't even gotten into customizing stuff yet because I've been discovering all sorts of other great stuff. Like everyone else has said, ability to get non-Apple approved apps is great. Be it things to change settings quicker (SBSettings) or something that let's you download streaming videos from sites like YouTube or others like it (iMobileCinema), the list goes on. Also, since everyone else has either dodged this fact or just forgotten, you can "acquire" most of the apps/games from the Apple App Store for free, and you can also get a program that let's you download torrents just like on a PC, giving you access to movies and music for free, all right on the phone itself. I'm not saying you should do this (or that you shouldn't), nor am I naming the programs that let you do this, because these forums aren't for that. I'm just stating that it's something you CAN do after jailbreaking, should you so choose.

2 - See #1 for my reasons (also check out this thread, the pics in here were the very reason I decided to JB immediately: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/605826/ ). As far as the non-Apple programs, pretty much everything that others have listed. I actually haven't dug too deep into Cydia apps yet, but I have found a bunch of cool stuff just from browsing quickly when bored.

3 - Yes, the phone still has 100% "stock" functionality, everything you could do/access before the JB you can still do after. Now you just have the ability to do tons more that you couldn't before. Cydia is just like the App store, just full of all things Apple basically doesn't want us to have lol.
 
I decided to jailbreak mine last night. I was a little nervous, but it was incredibly easy (so easy that when I was done, I thought for sure I had missed something :D) and it's been definitely worth it so far. I am still exploring, there's an endless amount of stuff that can be done now. Go ahead and do it :) If it's not for you, can always go back.
 
If AT&T hadn't forced Apple to restrict the Slingplayer to Wifi only I would probably not have gone the jb route, but now I really enjoy all the flexibility and features that should be included in the first place.

For me, the things I enjoy with my post jb 3GS are...

1. Watching TV on my phone almost everywhere (not just in wifi hotspots).
2. Using Skype to call friends in China.
3. Allowing me to unlock my phone for overseas travel without using AT&T.
4. Customizing my phone with Winterboard.

I have had no issues with jb. Works just like it should.
 
guys... i have a jailbroken 3GS ... after i connected to the itunes .. it worked fine.. i disconnected it... later when i connected it again .. i don't know what went wrong ...i tunes us giving me the message that the sim is not supported "as if it locked" i am trying to re-jailbraek it with purplera1n but it is not working ... anyone can help???
 
Are you using an AT&T sim or did you unlock it and now it the unlock doesnt work?

no i'm not using AT&T ... i bought it unlocked and i am using another provider .. and it is working fine... but i can not sync in itunes as it keeps detecting it as a locked device and showing the message "the sim inserted is not supported...etc"
 
The best reason to jb in my opinion is to use the app backgrounder.
This lets you run apps in the background. I use it to listen to Pandora while browsing the web.

Other apps I use.

Southpark Mobile - stream or download any South Park episode
MXTube: download any youtube video
Mplayer - play avi's without needing to convert
Docs - open word docs
snes4iphone - play snes roms
xGPS - turn by turn GPS
Winterboard - Use custom themes
Pdanet - tethering
OpenSSH - useful for copying files to and off the phone.
 
interesting post, asks all the same questions I have, bar 1.

The information I already have on my phone (messages/contacts/music etc), will that go after using the purplera1n? I'm pretty new to using the iPhone so haven't had to restore anything yet, but does iTunes back up the messages?

No, the phone will be exactly as it was before you used Purplera1n. It doesn't do a restore (like the Redsn0w method does) so you don't lose any data. Still, should you choose to use the Dev Teams JB you would just backup your phone in iTunes first, then just sync the contacts and such back to it afterwards.

When gathering the iBEC and iBSS files mine required a restore. Doesn't really matter as all that info will be on your computer when you backup
 
Ra1ned my wife's GS yesterday and she loves it.

1. sbsetting
2. Madvlock
3. Category
4. PDAnet

GS performance is great with JB.

My 3g always hunger for more mem but GS seems to have over 100mb free mem..:p
 
You're assumption is that because the 3gs has more features, there is less of a reason to JB. When in fact, the 3gs is the BEST phone to jailbreak because it is so fast.

Performance isnt hampered by any of the products.

The iPhone is great, but it has soo much potential that apple will not let it use. JB lets it fulfull its full potential.

One of my favorites is Lockinfo. You know how every other PDA type phone has useful information, such as todays meetings, weather etc on the lock screen, yet apple has nothing but wasted space? Now you can make it useful again.

You guys are funny. I would love to see the look on your faces when you finally decide to exceed 55 MPH, loiter in a 'No Loitering' zone, or jaywalk. ;)

Seriously. You guys act as if we're breaking some sort of covenant with Apple when we jailbreak. Its just a bunch of hacks. No different from when people discovered you can run unsigned content on a PSP or that PC's can emulate console games. Relax. :p
